Previous car: MY05 Forester XT



Current car: White 08 Passat Wagon TDI

Reason for change: I loved the forester, but getting to that age where other things are becoming more important. Wanted something the misses could drive and drive safely. Wanted something economical as I will be doing a lot more driving around this year. Wanted less attention from the police..

That looks awesome, nice and subtle. I just gave my 07 Xt to the Mrs as we have a newbie arriving in July and she wants me wack on some rims. Amazing the difference some rims and an inch or so can make (parcel post letterbox works too).

Thanks Adrock. The rims are off a JDM Fosrester STi and its sitting on stock STi struts and springs. Was so easy to mod when everything just bolted on

Not funny about the letter box.. I have popped the hood to find junk mail sitting on the intercooler!!

Got sick of all the ricers wanting to race, cops pulling you over for any old reason, and all the fake GT stripes on all the 6 cylinders. Was the most awesome car I've yet owned though! The shake at idle, the sonorous noise at WOT, the sheer size of the engine.

GT TDI had the fun factor, grunt, stealth, cops leave you alone and I don't live at servo's. The build quality is light years apart.

I'm not surpried that Subaru is winning the race for previous cars but I'm very surprised about Ford / Holden !!!
I've never ever owned either (and never will). It must be a dramatic change for those who have defected from the local stuff.

Mazda6 MPS... great fun car.

Positives about it over the R36 - more balls to the wall than the R. Getting the 6 sideways was easy as, and you could steer it beautifully with the throttle on the limit. It is a more engaging drive than the R is, it involves you more and tells you more. And the turbo whoooosh was addictive LOL. It just wanted to be thrashed, and rewarded you when you did. Chipped it was a monster. Seriously hard shove in every gear, and 1st was mental. Never took it to the 1/4s, but it should have been mid to late 13s given the 180KW at all four wheels it was pulling. Bumpstop ride on the 6 was MUCH better than the R, yet still had excellent stiff sports suspension. R is a softer drive, not in suspension, but in its feel - as the driver I feel more distanced from the road, and less on the edge. Not to say the R is any slower, because I don't believe it is, but I think it would take a bit more skill to punt it around as quickly - it feels heavier in the nose, wants to understeer more, so has to be driven differently.

Negatives or ways the R is better - The build quality, whilst pretty good, was not the same as the VW. And the R is just so much car for the money. Sounds soooo much better too. I had some reliability issues with my 6, so let it go at about 2.5 yrs old. R is much classier, both inside and out. The R is soooo effortlessly quick. It is just a seamless stretch of power that just goes on and on.

As you can probably tell, I like both of them!

i defected from Ford (XR5 Turbo) just too harsh for day to day and the six speed manual was a pain in the arse around town. Lots of fun when we played though. However, my previous car was a subaru Liberty Spec B 6 cyl. Great car and the best stereo i have ever had (McIntosh)....and yes i think its better than the VW upgrade option (dyna audio?). To say it was a dramatic change is an understatement....i call it a life change.

For one the column mounted paddle shifters were awesome, way better than the useless plastic buttons on the R36 and the rear bias AWD was very good most of the time. The servicing costs were low and the reliabilty very high (not that I'bve had any issues) Not sure I agree about the MacIntosh (it was in name only in the late cars, licensed by Clar**n, only the very first Macs were actually designed by Mac, Lexus have the best OEM stereo by far, designed by Mark Levinson)

As you can tell by my signature I have come from Subaru.....3 WRX's over 11 years and that doesn't include the 2003 Forester XS luxury we had at one stage as the family car. (this is now a 2004 BMW X5) I loved the acceleration, the 4 whhel drive , the sound and the price of the WRX. Small mods would gain huge performance. My biggest issue as I got older was the luxury. Well there wasn't any. But we all grow up.

I found my last WRX, it was too soft, and "kids" could afford the early models I onced owned. I did not enjoy the boy racer image. It was time for a change. The rest is history. The R36 is Best car I've ever owned.

I second your opinion on the Mark Levinson sound system in Lexus cars, I'm really going to miss that and am very interested to see how the Dynaudio stacks up against it when I get my car.

Previous car was a lightly modded MY04 STi.

Reason for change: Needed something slightly bigger to accomodate the little addition to the family. Got sick and tired of 'P' platers trying to race while the little one was in the back. The refinement, the gadgetry was leaps and bounds over the STi - as you'd expect over a 4-5 year old car. The STi was fun however, the Passat CC puts a smile on the dial

I had Alfa Romeo's, all were little 33's.....Awesome little car, a ton of fun. Still reckon the 1.7ltr would go very close to beating the VR6 which I currently own.
(I am going to test that soon when the 33 is back on the road after the motor change hahaha....its been 3 years since it was on the road)

her previous: bmw 528i wagon 2000

finally worked out that you just can't beat the high costs of owning bmw: either savage depreciation or high maintenance costs and hassles for old ones . so made the switch to a more economical option. while the bmw was a good car, the wife actually much prefers the passat ( loves her heated seats, sat nav, blutooth, electric seats, long range. i love having a spin in it too. compared to the bm it is excellent value, but not really in the same league. ( current bm wagon is 120k+).

Waiting on MY10 Passat 125tdi Wagon (hopefully next month).
Reason for change - Sick of filling up with fuel every 400km. Sick of fiddly attachment of roof racks (for the sail boards). A lttle more room (like everybody else, find the new liberty / outback styling scary!). Choice of factory customisation (at a cost and six month wait). Can only hope that the VW is as reliable as the last 3 subies i"ve owned.
