  • brake pad life on Passat B6

Up to 35,000kms just had service said brake pads front and rear still look ok.

What kms have people got up to before needed them changed, realise it depends on driving style etc, mien are prob more freeway condition but with stop / start traffic thrown in, i usually try and coast up to traffic lights rather than slam on the brakes.

Remsa pads (part of the TRW group), which are VERY high quality european made, are $109 for the front and $79 for the rear. There are cheaper options if you want to disconnect your wear sensors, but the Remsa as a better than OEM high quality pad are hard to beat, and include the wear sensors.

Sick of paying too much for performance brake pads? Want high performance with low rotor wear?

        Wear sensors? Pls explain.

Not the concept but on the Passat? I didn't know they existed.

Yep, that pic is of the later model Passat (C2, C5) pads, not B6, but the style of wear indicator is very similar, just the plug is a little different...

The wear sensor only works if it is the outside pad that wears. Which is odd as the inside pad wears first given the piston is on the inside.

My Passat got to 60K before the inside rears went. No dash warning. Just a scraping sound which was later diagnosed as metel on metal. Dealer didn't check the inside pad for wear at the 60K service. Just the outside. Basatrds. I still have my front brakes but they will be needing replacement at the 75K service.

When they replace pads they also replace disks as the euro disks cannot be machined properly. Set of rear disks and pads cost me $600. Fronts may be a little more.

I've just had the 60,000km service done, brakes OK, I even asked them to check inner and outer pads and all OK. I'm about 70/30 hwy/city.
