  • Oil warning indicator R36

    Hey all,

My oil warning light came on today, after 7000kms. I topped up with 300ml of oil and I'm hoping that will solve it... will find out tomorrow.

Was wondering if anyone experienced this so early in the engine's life and if I should be worried about it?

R36 if that makes a difference

    Cheers

Some VAG engines use a bit of oil while they are wearing in. Most settle down after 15,000km and use less (some don't). Excessive oil consumption seems more common on the turbo 4's than the V6's.

How many Kms ago did you last check the oil level in your engine ? (please don't say "never" - it make me angry and then I go into rant mode about reading owner's manuals and looking after your car properly and saving money and avoiding expensive engine damage and crashes etc etc.....)

I have checked the level a while ago @ about 1500kms and it was normal.

Yes, I should check it more often

I think I will bring it in for an early oil change

The low oil light came on in my 103TDi at about 10,000 km (I had been checking it and knew the level was slowly dropping). It took almost a litre to fill it and it hasn't used another drop since. Got the 30k service last week.

I suggest you buy some (approved spec) top-up oil and keep the level at least to the 1/2 way mark. That will give the engine a better quantity of oil to work with. Engine oil does an important job of cooling various hot engine components (eg pistons, turbo shafts) as well as lubricating moving parts.

I always try to keep my engines close to the "full" mark (but it is easier with mine as neither uses much oil at all).
