  • Coolant warning

3500 ks on the new R36 and the low coolant warning light is giving me grief. Open the hood and there's no coolant in the reservoir. I unscrew the cap and a surge of coolant flows back into the reservoir. The level now exceeds the maximum level. No coolant warning and everything is fine. Go figure!

Eeek - when my Subaru did that it ended up being the head gaskets - but that was at 120,000kms (and a known issue - although not known enough to warrant Subaru chipping in any $).

I'd be getting it checked ASAP. Hopefully it's just a leak elsewhere in the system letting air in and causing boiling off of fluid.

Sounds to me like it just needs bleeding properly.

Had exactly the same experience as you. After a longer drive on a hot 35 degree day the coolant light stayed on. Rang VW who said it's "because your car's new and it's the first time its been driven in heat" and advised to open the filler cap to purge some air out of the system.

Sure enough... pop open the bonnet, notice that the reservoir is very low, open the filler cap and after a big hiss the coolant level immediately normalises. This all happened 3 weeks ago and have kept an eye on the coolant level since. No further issues so far touchwood.

Hope it stays that way for you and me both
        Happy motoring!

          Hey guys,

My fathers R36 has had this issue occur twice in the past fortnight..which has required the car to be towed back to the VW dealer. On the first occasion they gave the excuse of air in the system and just opened up the cap. On the second occasion we asked for this issue to be looked at further..they came back saying that the coolant reservoir put in our R36 is the incorrect size with incorrect min markings, therefore a new one has been ordered and will be installed on the car. hope this helps.

          Cheers,
