SUNA for RNS510?

No, the service sucks, SUNA suck as a company, you would have to buy a new car with RNS 510 even if VW did offer it (see point 2 that SUNA suck), the system is useless and can be an hour behind on updates and the system is made obsolete by google maps traffic which is actually realtime and accurate.Originally posted by nivek View PostSorry if this has been discussed before... but is there anyway to enable SUNA as per this article for our RNS510?

Does anybody know if the Suna Traffic Channel is up and running in Brisbane yet? (http://sunatraffic.com.au/consumer/index.html) What about compatability with RNS510?

Actually if you look at the map disc. the toc information file contains a TMC line. TMC = suna & that field is left blank. Compared to the garmin devices that line seems to be the code needed to break the encryption that suna uses. Not sure if anyone else has other information. v16 of maps is due soon anyways maybe suna will be activated then with the new maps?

Suna (rubbish product) will not be enabled with the new maps.Originally posted by plasmod3 View PostActually if you look at the map disc. the toc information file contains a TMC line. Suna (environmental vandals) will only sell their service with new hardware, if you want to get it on your Volkswagen you will have to wait until Volkswagen offer it (and I really doubt they will as it's rubbish) and you will than have to purchase a new car.
They can't just enable it in the new maps.
There's a few manufacturers offering this service now but once people realise how absolutely useless it is I'm not sure that the other manufacturers will offer it.
If Suna were smart (and they're not) they would team up with google and use the google data to update the cars realtime rather than relying on traffic loops on the ground that don't offer a realistic view of traffic conditions.
But Suna's traffic model will see it fail unless they get the government to throw more money at them, selling the service only with new hardware and not offering subscriptions is crazy and will cost them a lot of revenue.
IMO the only useful traffic service is google maps with traffic info turned on.website: www.my-gti.com

I have a Navman S50 which I bought before the Suna service started. Navman brought out a new map version and I had to buy a cradle to work with the suna service but work it does.
So it is possible to get it enabled on existing units.
VW/SKODA should actually be compelled to offer it as they advertise the traffic function/TMC as being available in their literature.

No it's not, you purchased a cradle that has the FM component required to enable the service and the license is attached to that cradle. The RNS 510 has the TMC functionality inbuilt.Originally posted by paulconsidine View PostI have a Navman S50 which I bought before the Suna service started. Bulls**t, the traffic function is available but SUNA are a private company (that receive government funding and assistance) and choose to market their product in a way that requires you to purchase a brand new unit with it enabled to use the service, you can't buy a subscription to the service and they choose what to support.VW/SKODA should actually be compelled to offer it as they advertise the traffic function/TMC as being available in their literature.
The service is useless anyway so it's not like you're missing anything, better to use Google Traffic as it's actually usable and up to date rather than 30 minutes or more out of date.website: www.my-gti.com

TMC IS available, the unit has the TMC functionality built in however SUNA are a commercial operation that broadcast a signal that is encrypted and only readable by customers of theirs. There is nothing stopping you or anyone else from setting up your own service that will broadcast an unencrypted TMC signal.Originally posted by paulconsidine View PostWell tell us what you really think!
I dont give a crap whether it is SUNA or someone else, the VW and SKODA literature says the TMC is available so it should be available...
Volkswagen also say the car has a CD player, is it their fault if you don't have any CD's to play in there? Should Volkswagen supply you with free CD's?website: www.my-gti.com

On some of the saved radio stations I have on my RNS I get a little "TP" symbol appearing which IIRC from the manual means Traffic Programme. Does that mean SUNA is broadcasting on those frequencies and the RNS is picking up that there is a data stream there? I've always wondered whether they were legitimate or just something weird that appears when you tune into certain radio stations...Originally posted by Maverick View PostTMC IS available, the unit has the TMC functionality built in however SUNA are a commercial operation that broadcast a signal that is encrypted and only readable by customers of theirs.Pete

If you have TP enabled in the setup the TP symbol will turn on when it picks up a broadcast (encrypted or not). SUNA for example transmit in Brisbane on Nova, not that you need to be tuned to Nova to pick up the traffic broadcasts but this is the channel that it's broadcast with. I assume that in Melbourne and Sydney they only broadcast on one channel as well.Originally posted by Pana View PostOn some of the saved radio stations I have on my RNS I get a little "TP" symbol appearing which IIRC from the manual means Traffic Programme. Mav - next logical question given your recommendation regarding google traffic - is there any clever way of making it work on the RNS - as I cant think of any.
With regards VW/SKODA's obligation to make it work - they sell the device with the RDC-TFC function advertised as a feature and I reckon that they should make it work.
SUNA are the only show in town, and whilst I appreciate what you say about them being a private company, I wasn't directing my comments towards SUNA but towards VW/SKODA. It is my view, to follow on from your analogy, that given that SUNA is the only show in town for RDC traffic data, then they have sold the RNS with a CD player - but left the consumer to make the CD's before they use it.
I believe VW/SKODA should be forced to sit down with SUNA and come to some arrangement - or provide some form of recompense to the punters that bought the system on the understanding that it had certain capabilities.

I didn't say there was, what I did say was that the only useful traffic system was the google one which is fully integrated into Audi's new satnav system which also gives you street view along with many other features.Originally posted by paulconsidine View PostMav - next logical question given your recommendation regarding google traffic - is there any clever way of making it work on the RNS - as I cant think of any.
Talk about a straw man argument. With regards VW/SKODA's obligation to make it work - they sell the device with the RDC-TFC function advertised as a feature and I reckon that they should make it work.
VW/Skoda sell their cars with many "capabilities" listed.
They have speedometers capable of doing 250kph+, should they be obligated to supply me with roads that allow this speed? After all it's clearly shown in the brochures.
What about their 5 seats, should they also supply you with friends/family to fill up those empty seats?
See how pointless those sorts of arguments are? The car can do both of these (as in it has the capability to do it) but you need the right conditions (just like you need to live somewhere there is a free or subscription traffic service to use the traffic facility).
And as for advertised as a feature, tell me where they have advertised the car with this as a major selling point because in every brochure I've looked at it I can't recall it being mention nor in the specs more than once or twice in small print.
??? So if the AM stations were switched off this is also Volkswagen/Skoda's fault and they should have to provide AM stations? I'm not following your logic at all.SUNA are the only show in town, and whilst I appreciate what you say about them being a private company, I wasn't directing my comments towards SUNA but towards VW/SKODA. It is my view, to follow on from your analogy, that given that SUNA is the only show in town for RDC traffic data, then they have sold the RNS with a CD player - but left the consumer to make the CD's before they use it.
Why should they be forced to pay Suna a fee for every car sold in Australia when a) the service is only in capital cities, b) 99.9% of customers wouldn't give a toss and c) the service is useless?I believe VW/SKODA should be forced to sit down with SUNA and come to some arrangement - or provide some form of recompense to the punters that bought the system on the understanding that it had certain capabilities.
If you read the brochures and specs sheets that were supplied by Volkswagen/Skoda you would realise that some features may not be usable and that you should confirm any details with your dealer. By all means however take Volkswagen/Skoda to court because even the most stupid of judges will not believe that you based the purchase of your car on it working with a third party supplier's service.Last edited by Maverick; 13-10-2010, 11:04 PM.website: www.my-gti.com
