I had the VW stainless steel load sill protection strip fitted after I gouged the sill with a wheel on a suitcase (black gouge on white sill - looked awful).
The metal strip covered the gouge; if you use the Ducoscratch film you will have to do it while the sill is in good condition.
Expensive, like all VW accessories, but protects from easily caused damage.

While I was at it, I also did the 4 doors, door sills. The front two look great, however the rear did not turn out well at all.

I guess that is what you get for DIY!

Anyway, I will take the car and get the rears removed and replaced professionally.
Any Pics of the finished product Ope126?

Luckily my car is only 2 weeks old, so it is still in GOOD condition...

But I agree, if you had a deep scratch the stainless steel one would be my choice also!

I have the VW stainless steel protector fitted to my IG R36. It sticks out a bit visually, but it's something I'm willing to live with for the protection value. It's also a stick-on affair, for anyone who is considering this option. The adhesives don't seem to hold the stainless steel plate flush with the bumper, and it was already lifting at delivery. The sales guy said that it may not sit flush because it wasn't designed for the R36 bumper, but if I press it down, it seems to fit perfectly. So what he said doesn't really make sense.

Does anyone have any tips for re-sticking the plate so it sits properly on the bumper?

Buy some M3 2way automotive tape ,but you have to make sure that there is no wax or polish where it is to be attached or it wont stick as you have found out.

Thanks. Might give it a go, but I think I'll have to find a way to clean under the strip first I think, as it is pretty grotty right now (lousy Melbourne weather...)

And given that the dealer fitted it prior to delivery, I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't do it properly the first time.

Alcohol or methylated spirits will do as long as all wax and grease is removed

Went to Ducoscratch at Ormeau today and had the rears re-done, now looks great!

The bumper is the same as a normal Passat, from halfway up, so the shape shouldn't be an issue.

The problem is, they don't stick too well at the best of times, and a lot of this is due to poor surface prep.

A better-quality double-sided tape, like from 3M would do, but surface prep is still paramount. Bare in mind, there's a very good chance that some damage will be inflicted onto the sill protector on removal. If this concerns you, speak to the dealership about it's poor fit, and you should be able to get a replacement. We've done a few over the years, ourselves. Once they're on properly, they don't come off.

I thought metho was bad for automotive paint?

I'm more concerned about getting under the strip - it's only lifting at the ends, the centre is still firmly attached. I don't want to rip it off unless I have to - damage to the paint and all that. I suspect it will be easier to get the dealership to fix it - it's all under warranty after all.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions, much appreciated.

I had the same probs on the R36, even with the super expensive trick auto tape. So my next option is to attack it with some sikaflex. no turning back from there.

Does your wife own a hair dryer? Then its only a matter of heating up the strip and lifting the strip off the bumper, then will come away very easy.
You will have to remove the old 2way tape which might take more time than removing the strip its self.

A little bit goes a long way!

Keep it away from the edges, so it doesn't squeeze out onto the bumper. It can be a real cow to clean off.
