Passat need F&R sways?

howdy all

Posting this Q for a friend of mine who has a MY08 Passat V6 FSI sitting on factory Sports springs and nothing else done to it.

We got talking and he was going in to get a reflash (APR), intake and lower springs.

Whilst the flash and intake will be superb and pretty much can't be questioned, when I asked him why he wanted it lower he said he wanted it to be flatter and more neutral in the corners and just corner better.

My opinion now is that he tries a F&R sway bar (HD?) setup with his stock springs first and see what kind of help it gives him? He doesn't want to go all the way to coilovers, and if anything will uprate his springs and match some nice shocks.

Was i right in suggesting sways?

Would love experiential input too if possible, but anecdotal is fine.

Not sure about the B6 Passat but my experience with the B5.5 Passat, adding a rear sway improves the cornering.

The B5 and B5.5 Passats do not come with rear sways and these need to be an aftermarket addition. Some tuners add the rear sway and upgrade the front to thicker ones.

In my experience, the thicker fronts make the car too rigid and unwieldy - the factory ones together with a rear makes for a better driving package.

An upgraded rear sway bar would be a great suggestion to tighten things up through the corners. Most VW's will have quite a bit of understeer from the factory, mainly for safety reasons. Adding an upgraded rear sway is a great way to reduce some of the understeer and increse the spring rates in the rear without lowing the car.

It really comes down to a personal preference as to what the "ideal" suspension setup is, but I do think an upgraded rear sway bar is one of the best mods that can be done to a stock car for handling.
