  • Newbie Question :) - Passat 1998

I own a Passat 1998 (manual), and I have a few questions I hope someone can shed a light on. I have just taken this car for service.

    1. I noticed that starting the car isn't quite as smooth as usual. When I put the key into the ignition, usually I can start it with one go without having to pump the accelerator. I have had the battery replaced (RACV) yesterday, and it seems to be OK, except that it sounds like the engine almost dies when I start it (the engine rev goes up and down quite frantically)

    2. What's the ideal idle rev speed? Mine is steady at around 9000rpms, I think it was slightly higher before.

    3. During low speed - low rev condition, for example when I am parking the car or getting the car out of the garage, I find myself having to pump the accelerator more than I usually have to. Otherwise, the revs drop and the engine dies. What happens?

Throttle body adapation is my guess. What engine do you have, is it turbo?

You shouldn't need to pump the accelerator at all on an electronically fuel-injected car.

As Gavin suggested, the throttle body make require an adaptation, or "re-learn".

Also, the throttle body may be dirty and carbon'd up.

Thanks. How do I get the throttle body to re-learn?
And if it is dirty and carboned up, how do I clean it?

A VW dealer will be able to carry out a re-learn for you. After it's been cleaned, of course.

Thanks, so there's no way I could've done it myself huh.
I'll bring it to them later then. Again, thanks

                *bump

So I rang few Volkswagen service centers around Melbourne East, no luck.
They are all fully booked out until end of January. :|
Anyone in Melbourne's Eastern suburb with VAG-COM willing to help me out? Message me. Please. :|
