  • Questions re my passat ? issues?

I have a passat cc & after about 3 weeks of ownership i am wondering if a few things i have noticed are sig issues or not. Hope the forum can help.

    1. a whirring noise that lasts 1 sec always on reverse & on turning the steering wheel & the car to the left backwards. Happened 3 times so far....doesn;t sound like a new car should have that ? any views on what it can be & how sig?

    2. tinkling noises from the car after a 10-15min drive & then switched off. Can;t tell where from the car exactly it is coming from & it doesn;t seem to hap[pen when driving only when the car is parked & 'switched off'.

    Any help out there? tia.

Sounds like it could be normal metal to metal contraction noises as hot parts of the engine start to cool down (often a high pitched metallic tick...tick...tick). Is it more noticeable when the engine is hotter when you switch off ? (compared with after a very short drive where the engine hasn't warmed up properly)

Yes, definately much more noises when the engine is hot compared otherwise. I guess from your explaination that sounds normal but er should i be hearing it? I remember back to the honda civic or the toyota & they have nany a noise at all.

The CC definitely makes interesting noises when starting and when switching off. I haven't really given it much thought. However, I am aware that a lot of German luxo/prestige cars make interesting sounds after a drive. Mostly, its fans cooling down the car, which may explain the whirring noise (though not why its on reverse etc). Not sure what the tinkling noise you refer to is though.

Hey if its a new car and your worried about them just discuss it with your dealer and he will be able to note this down, and if it becomes a problem lm sure they will look after you. thats what your warranty for!!!

Sounds good Except i don't trust the service dept of Barloworld Mascot Will s/t Chatswood Classic cars to see what they find out about it. Doesn;t happen often, just 3 times so far in 3 weeks but anough to make me worry

I have been using Barloworld Mascot for 4 years and always find them great.

Is there any reason you dont trust em - I would be interested to find out.

                Cheers

A lot of people apparently don't trust them.

Although I only found that through this forum...

As for the tinkling noise, yes, that is heatshields around the exhaust expanding and contracting. Just about every car does it. Not sure about the whirring noise, though. Given that it occurs rather seldomly, don't expect the dealer to be able to find or fix it straight away.

Yeah, I've had 3 cars that do that tinkling noise after shutdown. My 5 year old Subaru STi did that with the stock exhaust and with the modified 3" exhaust as well - although a little louder. Try a spirited run with a red-hot turbo

Nothing to worry about IMHO, my Subaru didn't have a single exhaust related issue in all those "tinkling" years...

whirring and buzzing noises are something I've gotten used to. Never had any problems with them, but I'm sure the car would do a lot more buzzing and whirring with a lot of the automated gadgets and features doing their thing.

Sounds like it's the exhaust (& manifold), it expands when it warms up and retracts again when the car is turned off. If you are worried, you can open the bonnet and see where the sound comes from, if between the engine and firewall then it's likely the exhaust, this is normal and nothing to worry about.

I agree. I also once drove through a deep puddle which buckled the heat shield underside and it became much noiser- along those line - you havent gone over a big branch or something to have caused it?

No not at all But interestingly enough the more i drive it...now odo at 1700km the less the noise. the other day i barely hear any tinkling noises, nor is the whirring noise back as well. Perhaps it's all good?
