  • RNS 510 Upgrade

Any of the other passat boys done the upgrade to the latest firmware for the RNS510. See thread here....

    http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=38572

    I am very keen to:

    1. get the dual screen reversing camera and sensors on the one display and
    2. if possible reduce the startup time on the screen before the camera kicks in with the VW logo etc

Apom. I have RNS510 units both in the Missus GT Sport and my R36. We had the GT sport's firmware upgraded about 5 months ago free of cost during the last service. Just had to convince them that there was an update available.

The benefit of doing it this way is that if thare is a problem with the update (the thought of bricking the unit spooks me), the service guys can sort it out.

Lost our music but not the maps.

The update was the most recent at the time, but not sure if that is still the case now.

Slighty OT, but to do with the RNS510. Does anyone know how to make the DVD player multi-region?

      Cheers,
      Jayse.

          Hi Benem,

Turn on the RNS and hold the setup button immediately, continue holding the setup button whilst the unit loads and after approx. 20 secs it should enter test mode. This should then display all the information you need.

Once you're in test mode you can reboot the unit by simultaneously pressing the following button combination < > and the info button. Alternatively if the above doesn't work vagcom will be needed

          Cheers.

Depending on the current firmware version, they won't all go into test mode without VAGCOM programming. As far as I know if that is the case, then you'll need to either code it or look at the label on the top of the unit.

I have the 2660 firmware in mine, but no reverse camera (yet... ) so can't answer those questions Apom...

I upgraded ages ago on my RNS 510 with no problems .
If you have a camera the full screen with transparent tab is more than worth it.

OK, Upgrade complete.... details found along the way.

                    1. Upgrade occurs as per the directions on the MY GTI site, just ensure you burn the image to a disc (and not just the image file, thanks Simon)

                    The Good things....

                    2. Didn't lose any of my music, all still in place
                    3. Upgraded reversing with sensors showing and transparent tabs works well
                    4. Seems to start a little quicker which makes the reversing exercise a more useful tool.
                    5. Buttons that wont do anything are greyed out, a nice touch

                    The not so good things.

                    6. Mainly with the SATNAV but I needed to setup the nav so:
                    - it didnt think it was in the northern hemisphere
                    - reset the maps to show on the screen
                    - change all the display setting to make it logical (ie like auto zoom etc)

                    7. It has lost the SATNAV directions on the MFD which is a pity, would like to know how to get them back (Any ideas anyone?)
                    8. The climate controls dont come up on the display as per the Passat CC that I thought was part of the upgrade (Again any one else have this?)

I havent had a chance to test the SDHC as yet, new cards arrive tomorrow!

THe sat nav should "find" itself again soon. Mine was lost for a couple of hours, but then was fine. Older units suffer the bug where every time it is restarted it goes back to Germany on 2660, but your unit shouldn't suffer that.

As to having lost satnav integration - that is a concern... Which one did you download, there are two - one for Skodas that is modified so steering wheel buttons work and one for VWs. Do your steering wheel buttons still work, and does the RNS510 still show music info in the MFD?

CC style climate control requires other mods - different climate control unit, possiblt CAN BUS gateway upgrade, and some wiring and vent mods too I think. LOTS of work...

                          Downloaded this one

Weirdest thing.... Just went down to check on the audio control from the steering wheel and it wasn't there either. (thinking... here we go again!) So turned the car off and then decided to see what else didn't work. Turned the car back on decided to go through each screen in the settings menu. I didn't change anything and decided to give up, so excited the setting menu and then the audio controls (on the MFD and Wheel) returned and the navigation view on the MFD also returned.

Hey apom, sometimes my mute button on the wheel doesn't work. Most of the time it does. So I think you're not alone there.
