  • R36 tyres

New to this site but good to see feedback coming through. Have a blue Aug08 R36 wagon with 23Ks on the clock but need to replace tyres. Vehicle has Dunlop Sport SP1 as delivered, but what to replace these with ? Pireli PZero Rosso, Sumitomo ZIII ..... any suggestions would be appreciated

I did read some good reviews about the Sumitomo's.

Make sure the tyres are speed rated to the minimum spec required by the factory to remain legal.

Try http://www.carbonblack.com.au/car-ty...are-tyres.aspx for a tyre comparison using the size required.

New tyres after just 23,000km (for the Dunlop SP1) is very low. Do you have a budget for the new set?

Mine were gone before the 15000km service!

I have Bridgestone RE001's and I'm pretty happy with them for the price

Have clocked up 100,000km on my 06 V6 4motion. OE tyres were Pirrelli P zero rosso and got 46,000 out of them. I am particular with my tyre pressures and alignments.
2nd set were GT Radial Champiro HPX... nasty tyre very hard, & strange handling, but 45,000 out of them as well
Am on a set of Kuhmo ecsta XT KU37 which are giving good QUIET service to date. Plus instructed my tyre shop to set up alignment to R32 specs.
As many would agree, you get what you pay for in tyres. I drive long country milages and am happy to go with a more cost efficient tyre.

I did post a reply to your question in the Golf forum, but I will repeat it here.

I have the Pirelli P Zero Rosso's and I am very happy with them. I have done 18,000kms on them so far and they look like they are only half way worn, 6mm tread depth all way round. I thoroughly recommend that you get yourself a wheel aligmnent by a reputable wheel aligner as this makes a huge difference to tread wear life and handling.

The only issue with the Rosso's is that they flat spot a little overnight, but a few km's of driving warms them up and they are fine. I purchased mine from Spinning Wheels at Waterloo as they really look after your rims and do a good job. http://www.spinningwheeltyres.com.au/

If you want the best possible mechanical grip, get some Michelin PS2's however be prepared to pay over $600 a corner unless you import them from America.

Goodyear F1 Assy's, Pirelli P Zero, Conti CSC3's are decent alternatives that are a bit cheaper.

I posted a previous thread about tyres, having put a set of sumitomos on (at 26,000kms)

I have done another 5,000kms since then and am over the moon about the new tyres. They are grippy, quiet, good in the wet, and appear to be wearing well.

Even my wife commented that she thought the car was quieter especially over coarse chip bitumen.

I was aprehensive of putting "cheap" tyres on the car (at $260 a corner they are significantly cheaper than the Michelins I was considering), but after doing some research and taking a chance, I could not be happier.

My uncle also put a set on his RX8, and cannot believe how good they are compared to the bridgestones he had on there.

Each to there own, but I honestly believe the Sumitomos are a great tyre for the R36.

                Cheers.

                Jon.

Thks for all the feedback guys .... i think I've narrowed it down to the Pireli PZero Rosso or Sumitomo .... Appreciate that everyone has their own style of driving but I'm sure I can get much better value for money than the SP1's currently on the beast ....
Will keep you posted with progress as purchase is a matter of urgency - pre xams..
                  Cheers Bob

Value for money out of the 2 you have chosen, the Sumitomo's are the choice hands down.

I would give them a whirl and see how they go.

It's as much the wheel alignment that I didn't do at time of purchase that has possibly caused the wear. Rotated and wheel align'd at 15K and this has helped with reducing wear. What I'm seeing and hearing is that alignment should be done every 5-10k depending on who you talk to !
In so far as budget goes ... I'd rather make sure the car is still a pleasure to drive rather than put on a set of tyres that do not do justice to the ride/handling. Reality is the SP01's have done the work fine but just worn out too quickly! Happy to spend $300-$450 provided wear is improved and handling/road noise is minimal....

                      cheers Bob

Cool... I will just never recommend something to someone unless I know they're willing to fork over the dollars for what I would recommend. People get pissed off sometimes when you recommmend something they're not willing to pay for.

I got 26k out of my Dunlops, and had a wheel alignment done when the car was a week old, and rotated once at 15k.

                          Could be the driving style.....

at least it is pre tax!

There is a great resource in the USA called The Tyre Rack. Here is a comparo of the top rated maximum performance summer tyres:

                              new tyres at last

gidday all. After all the searching on the internet and asking questions of fellow R36'rs, I have just purchased 4 Dunlop SP Sport Maxx TT. Managed to get these for $310 each at Beaurepairs and I'm happy with the tyres to date. Will be managing them better than the last set; ie rotate every 5K and align every 10K.
Thanks for all your comments and advice and if anyone wants to know how they are faring with wear/noise etc drop me a line.
