Looks like the RCD300 to me, to the best of my knowledge these were put into the MY08.
After that it was 310, and then 510 (I think).

Yeah the RCD-300/500 look very similar, the 500 has a built-in 6CD stacker and a couple of extra buttons below the screen, I'd say that's what's in the OP's car. I don't about 2009 models but I know the current 2010 model Passats have the RCD-510 (touchscreeen without navigation).

It could be worth contacting a dealer and seeing if they have any RCD-310/510s laying around that they've taken out of cars due to the client wanting the RNS-510 navigation unit installed. I'm sure someone on this forum (possibly Golf MkV forums) did that and saved a fair bit of money.

Be aware that an upgrade from an RCD300 to a 310 or 510 may require a CAN BUS Gateway upgrade. There is info on this (and some other stuff on upgrading from a 300 to a 310) here:

Swallowtail - yes appears to be same as the one in the youtube video.

I dont think I'll be upgrading the stereo... I only keep cars 3 years and phones are obsolete within a year so it hardly seems a worthwhile excersise
