remember this thread ==> Strange Whine

Well I decided that it was getting worse so I took it to my usual dealer and they initially said the same as the other dealer... normal turbo noise.

However they hooked it up to some diagnostic equipment and then said I needed a new turbo.

Car is booked in for a couple weeks time when a loan car is available

Unbelievable on a car in this category to need a new Turbo already. Sadly after experiencing several issues now and reading about other VW issues its a worrying trend and introduction into European motoring! I hope they get it sorted first time for you richdave

Yeah agreed... the DSG issue and now a faulty turbo... not exactly the level of quality and reliability I expected...

Why? Parts fail and they get replaced all the time. The Passat is just a Golf station wagon at the end of the day so it's nothing special that would make it immune to the same failures that all the other VAG cars that use the same components suffer.

What about all the people that don't have problems that don't post on the forums? VAG is one of the largest car companies in the world, you have to expect to hear about problems.

You want top notch reliability? Go for a bland boring Japanese built car with limited features to go wrong and no integration of the different features into the car.

You want a car loaded with features that you look for every excuse to drive it? Go for a car like a VW with systems that are fully integrated into the car but expect to have some problems along the way.

The more parts you have in a car and the greater the complexity means the greater chance of a failure of a part whether it be a $2 switch causing the rear tailgate to not function or a whine from a turbo.

How did the DSG issue go? What did the VW dealer do to resolve it?

THIS thread is worth a read... but the short answer is that the mechatronics module was replaced in my car and some others here... there are other threads about DSG issues though

Don't get me wrong... I still love the car however if the reliability is poor post warranty it may be the last VW I buy.

I will be buying extended warranty for both my VAG vehicles, and like Richdave I will be looking very closely at reliability very closely once the warranty runs out. I can cope with minor stuff that doesn't strand me on the side of a highway a long way from home, but coming home with my vehicle on a flat-top truck is no fun - I know because I've had to do it twice with my VW.

I like the drive, but reliability is even more important.

Glad the only noises mine's making (touch wood) are the loud, tractor types that it should do..

the noise is getting worse.. louder

It used to be a very subtle noise that was barely noticeable but now no mistaking it...

When are you going to get it fixed? Hopefully soon!
