  • R36 Air con

    Hi all,

Had the R36 for about 7 weeks now and not sure if I have an issue with the Air con. Only used it a hand full of times(the air con that is) but did use it again today. It took AGES for the car to cool down. I've just come from a 08 WRX and that Air con was very effective and cooled the car down in minutes. Today it took at least 5 minutes and on Full fan speed until the car eventually cooled down .

Any thoughts from other R36 or passat drivers on the effectiveness of the Air con.

How hot is it outside in Adelaide? I have no problems with the AC on mine up here in QLD...

It was 22 in the car after being in the sun for about half an hour.

        ahhh.... interesting..same problem here.

I would check out your temp gauge at idle to see if it starts to increase with the air on OR if the air cuts out after 5 minutes.

This is exactly what my car was doing and on the w/e it seems to have caused issues with overheating. The jury is still out to as if the 2 were related but check out my thread on R36 overheating!

Peter, I had an issue with the aircon in my R36 Wagon in January this year. The aircon couldn't make up its mind whether to blow hot or cold air, btw the outside temp was over 40. Eventually the fault (apparently not uncommon in VW V6's) was diagnosed as a blocked TX valve. The solution in my case was to replace the compressor. In the short term I found that by switching it on and off a couple of times sometimes works. cheers pj

check if the fan is cutting in when the car is hot. If there is no air blowing over the compressor the thing shuts itself down. Just had this problem diagnosed today as the problem with my overheating R36

Booked it in on Friday to get it looked at, will let you all know the outcome then. Also asked them to find the annoying squeek at the rear seats somewhere. Drives me crazy every time I drive over rough roads or drains/driveways.

I don't understand why people don't just use air con all the time. Especially when you've got climate control, just put the temperature on 24 and you're all good unless it's super hot and then you drop it right down.

Of course if you're going to give it some stick then turn it off to save some kW for the wheels.

                Hope you get it sorted.

                Cheers,

I actually prefer driving with windows or sunroof open - I can hear the glorious V6 noise better when I do LOL... and it saves a fair bit of fuel, although that is a minor consideration. I live in Queensland, the weather is brilliant - I like to enjoy it not always be stuck in artificially cooled air.

I do enjoy this too but for normal motoring you get annoying wind noise and you end up with a dusty interior.

If you want to hear the glorious sound, then it's time for you to invest in a nice cat-back

make sure you get them to hook not just to the diagnostics that shows the fan running. get them to direct hook it and ensure it works. That was the problem with mine.

Update all....had it fixed on Friday, Low on gas. I was very impressed with the service facility that Solitate automotive group had. Vey new and well designed. You can even watch the cars being serviced in the waiting room area looking over the workshop. Very neat.

They fixed the squeek to.....just closed the back seat properly!

I'm generally ok without ac unless temperatures start going north of 32.

                            Also it changes fuel economy.

In my 100 km or so Ive noticed 13.7L /100km with and around 12.4 without.

I don't know what average is but at the moment Im enjoying occasional leadfooting.

                              R36 air

                              Hi,

My 07 passat tdi had an air prob also after 12 months. Was not cooling down. VW service found that a faulty engine fan was the cause. They replaced it.
