  • Anyone installed a DVD Player

    Into their Passat?

I'm going on the first long road trip with the family to Brisbane in a few months, and want to get a DVD player to entertain my two year old.

I'm looking at the roof mount systems but am unsure if there is anywhere to secure the player to the roof. There is no centre light bracket that can be used like in other cars. Has anyone done such a thing, or even look into head rest mount screens?

I'm also worried about some 20 year old installer ripping apart my roof lining and placing wires across airbag points, so are there any recommendations on where to go?

    Thanks

I'd probably opt for one of those back of the seat/headrest slung units. Or even a portable unit that you can secure to the central console with some sort of fixture. With a 12V car lighter adapter or inverter you'll have the capability without tearing the car up.

Agree...we bought a cheapie for a couple of hundred for my duaghter and it has lasted and lasted. We can swap it around as we need to and take it on the plane if needed. The best part is that i dont need to chop my seat/car up.

I have a Philips (PET830) portable dvd player that works very well...

It is a flat panel only (no fold up screen) so it does not encroach into the childs area and comes with a great headrest mount that attaches to the head rest mounts. Is very easy to pull out and take into a restaurant too... Has a good battery life for those occasions as well. Has 2 headphone jacks and has decent speakers. I have combined with a child seat that has headphones in the head rest so our daughter can hear her DVD and we cannot!!! If you have two, it can link together so two monitors can watch the one DVD.

I have been over some pretty rough roads with it and it does not skip.

Starting to sound like a Philips salesman, however I can say that I have used this and it has worked brilliantly for us on every occasion.

          Cheers,

          Greg

if you do fit the player to the car, insist it is powered via the ignition and not direct to the battery.

these units can still draw power when off and can drain your battery. this happened to my brothers VW touraeg - went thru a few batteries b4 they diagnozed the dvd player as the culprit (after having been assured the dvd player was going thru the ignition.)

as it happened he reckons they used it twice in all the time hes had it -6 years.

let the kid/s look out the window, make them put up with your music, and let them learn to be quiet when they are told be quiet!!!

(I promise I am not bitter about being dragged from pillar to post as a kid stuck in the back of my fathers Butterscotch 1974 Toyota Crown listening to John
              'friggen" Cash and Judy Stone)
