  • R36 Overheating

Had a strange thing happen today... was doing the general rounds between taxi courier and general do it all when i was waiting for 5 minutes in the shade with the engine running when the aircon stopped working.

So as I started moving away I look down at the temp and it is just touching 120, the light starts to flash and I get a warning to check coolant. So, i turn all the accessories off and the temp guage starts to drop as soon as there is some airflow. Stopped briefly at some lights, temp starts to rise again, move away and with 3 minutes the temp is back at normal.

It is 35 today in brissy and we have a beautiful dust storm again but this is surely not to be expected.

I have checked the fluid levels and all as should be. Anyone else had similar issues or any ideas?

Never had this problem, but I would get this checked ASAP!
This should never happen, you should be able to idle with A/C on etc. for hours...
Maybe check your fuses and see if a Fan Fuse has blown.
Or even just lift the bonnet and see if the fans are engaging.

Yep I'd be checking the radiator fans. They have to run when the air con is on and that is the easiest way to check if they're working. Start the car up with the air con off and then turn the air con on. You should hear/feel the difference once they kick in. I'd open the bonnet and have a look too.
      Cheers,

Ok, spoke to the 1800 support and as the temp light has flashed it needs to go back to dealer. I just checked the fuses and without pulling out each one they seem to be ok. The book is friggin hopeless and doesn't tell you what ALL the fuses locations are. I have fused not listed in the book and other that you would think have a fuse are just blank. To make it worse the diagram for the in car box is for a LHD and mirror reversed.

When i start the car now after about 5 mins the air con cuts off, there are no additional fans cutting in, so i suspect that could be the problem. The temp did not seem to rise however.

One question also please. When I was checking the fuses I had a call during a fuse check and need to double check the location of a fuse please. If you have an R36 can you tell me if you have 25AMP fuse in your slot F11 or F12 please in the under bonnet fuse box. Much appreciated! The book doesnt show it!!

Get it to your VW dealer as soon as possible. It's not worth trying to diagnose it over the internet.

We had a customer who drove her TDI Tiguan to the point where it shut down completely, after it overheated. VW were extremely reluctant to replace the engine under those particular circumstances.

No R36, however when I refer to page 80 (booklet 3.3) I have the High Fuse Box. I have a 25amp fuse (yellow) in Slot F11, nothing in slot F12.
The booklet gives no reference to what Slot F11 is.
But if you have a Low Fuse Box, then F12 is for Telephone.

That's a real shame apom. It's obviously the aircon fan malfunctioning. It would probably be safe to drive it with the aircon off if the radiator fan etc is working; but what you've arranged is better still.

I know with my ex Accord Euro the aircon function would bring on another hum/fan when the car was idle.

I don't use aircon much; even in the hotter weather.

Let's hope your engine is fine; and I'm sure it will be.

No reply as yet from the Dealer. It was taken on a tilt tray this morning and they only started work on it this afternoon. Hopefully I will have some new this morning.

On another note, if you have a towbar fitted, don't rely on the rear tow hook point with the I bolt provided. We took the cover off this morning and the tow bar blocks the screw socket hole!!! You either need to used the tow bar itself as hook point or tow it on from the front

ok, problem diagnosed. The cooling fan was not working. Even though the system check said it was working when they hooked it up directly it did not work. When this happens the A/C should shut down but as the system was saying it was OK it kept running until it reached a critical shutdown mode for the A/C

Seems there is no problem with the engine as it also did not go into a fail safe mode when they get to a critical point. All checks have shown no issue which is the most important news.

The are frieghting a new part overnight from Sydney and the car should be ready tomorrow fingers crossed.

Lets hope that the end of my dealer visits for a while. 5 visits so far in only 4300kms, so not a good start. The only upside is that I have had lengthy test drives in replacement cars including a V6 Toureag (awesome) a petrol Golf 6 118 DSG (very ordinary) a diesel Golf 6 DSG (much better) a diesel Passat CC (better still) and currently a petrol Tiguan (slowly growing on me)
