  • R36 Sunroof Q - can u leave it open ?

In the middle of summer when I park up I like to leave my sunroof open a bit to let the heat out.

Is that possible with the r36 roof ? My understanding is that it shuts all the windows and roof when you lock it. Is that a setting on the car or am I buggered

You can probably change it via vagcom to stay open, i believe it will auto-shut after an hour though.

I have no idea why you would want to leave it open, its like an open invitation to a $70K car

Nope ... it will be a skinny mofo who climbs thru the 3-5 inches I'm after

Purely for ventilation and also for my dog who sits in the car sometimes. Same for the windows - I like the air to flow.

That brings me to another issue --- if I arm the security with my dog inside will he set it off if he moves ?

They overdo the security sometimes --- ffs we aint in Joberg and I dont really expect to be carjacked.

on my liberty subbie i can leave the roof and/or the windows open as much as I want.

This is usually a good thing except those rare occasions when it rains here in Melb and my roof is open Having said that ... it means I get to give the seats a wipe

U usually leave my roof tilted up, it hasnt ever closed after 1 hour, in fact stays up overnight quite regularly though i have got rain closing enabled which works a treat, this has saved me getting wet once or twice.

Well i know my can stay open, it can be closed when i lock the car by pressing & holding the lock button on the remote.

With regards to the sensor detector, you can switch that off you know. Otherwise your k9 will trigger it.

Barney comes to work with me daily --- some places he cant come into so ventilation is important

Two different ways to inactivate the alarm's interior motion sensors :

1 As theplanner says, press the switch that is (probably) partway down the driver's side B pillar before locking your car (this just inactivates the motion sensors when the alarm is set).

2 Double press the lock buttons on your remote - this will lock (but not deadlock) your car, and will leave the alarm switched off (totally).

The motion sensors on my Octy seem to be very sensitive, if I forget and set the alarm with one of my dogs in the car it will go off nearly straight away, even if the dog is lying still on the back seat.

It's certainly possible in my TDI. If you lock the car with the remote button, the windows close first, then after a pause of about a second (once they're closed) the sunroof will close, however for all this to happen the lock button needs to be held constantly. The sunroof doesn't close by itself an hour after the car is locked. I can't see any reason why the control logic for the sunroof would be any different for an R36.

When I want to leave it open for ventilation while parked, I'll normally crack the windows about 2-3cm, then open the sunroof to the max tilt position. Never had any issues.

I stopped leaving the sunroof open after a friend got a strawberry milkshake poured in to his car through the sunroof.

neat trick- if it was a teenager you could pour the milkshake down the crack in his exposed undies.

                          Watch out for big winds...

The only other thing that has happened to me is when the two front windows were open about 15mm (with streamlined weathershields installed) and the sunroof was tilted open about the same, a big wind has blown up and the ultrasonic inside has triggered the alarm.

I did not think to disable the interior sensor before locking, and lo and behold, my friends (where we were staying the night) and their neighbours were all woken by the sound of a Passat playing a tune at 3am.

But I know it works! ...and so do they...

I'll go back and check my manual to see if I have the rain sensor option to close the sunroof too - I have left it closed when parking at work because I thought it was going to rain, and then it never did. It would be nice to have the sunroof shut if the car sensed rain (or a milkshake for that matter - little sh&#!@ads)
