Passat DSG

Hi All,

I've seen the info from others here re problems with the Passat DSG. What is the problem? Doesn't really inspire me to go and get a 125 TDI after what I have read.

Are they lemons, bad luck, or that inconsistent VW quality that certain motoring editors write about.

The DSG HAD issues with jerky and erratic gear changes... mine was fixed with a mechatronic module replacement. Other's on the forum have had similar issues and similar resolutions.

All fixed now and NO issues...

Any new vehicles should not have this issue.

Has anyone thought of just changing the gearbox oil? Is that possible? Will that improve the gear shifts?

It is possible (and is done as part of scheduled servicing), but I believe it is rather expensive to do on the wet clutch 6speed DSG. If the problem was the gearbox fluid then I suppose it would help, but most of the people on here have found a replacement mechatronic unit is the real cure.

Does the cost of replacing the mechatronic unit covered under warranty?

Only if VWA agree that it is faulty and it is within the factory warranty distance/time (VW have a process the dealer has to follow to assess them).

Hmm..it's an Feb 09 delivered car. So i hope it is under that warranty. Will ring them up then. Thanks

Mine is a June 08 vehicle with 25000km on the clock, and the mechatronic unit was changed some 4 weeks ago under warranty - no issues, queries or hassles. Software update did not reduce the random jerkiness at takeoff so the dealer informed me they wanted to change the unit. Naturally I agreed - probably a little too quickly.

Been as good as gold since.

Before the change I loved everything except having to start from stationary - a little bit of a problem with a motor vehicle... Now I'm loving it all again!

it would seem that my 2008 R36 has developed this same problem, jerky takeoff from standstill, is worse when auto hold is on. have reported it to the dealer, is going in next week for a look.

It seems at its worst when reversing up a gentle incline at low throttle, almost like you are prodding the throttle on off etc.

car has done about 22,000km

will keep you posted with the outcome.

P.s. my Father in laws late 2007 125TDI passat developed the same problem at about 12000km took a while but eventually the mechatronics unit was replaced and all good now.

I 've just been reading about 13,500 VW's with DSG being recalled in the U.S. and having temp. sensors replaced. This is along with with heaps (of American owners) having the mechatronic unit replaced in their DSG's. My CC arrives in December, I presume being built around August, I hope all the DSG issues have been ironed out by then, it's making me a little nervous about the car. If I keep hearing negative stories about them, I'll be considering cancelling. A shame, I do love the idea of getting a CC.
