Passat Recall - ECU update

VW Australia have just issued a recall (23C4). It states that the 'Electronic Control Unit software in your vehicle is required to be updated'

A German forum is abuzz with this recall because people are experiencing a general loss of power after the update (at higher revs).

Does anyone have any knowledge of the truth behind this "update"?

Update

Well I've had the update. The Service Mgr explained it involved a remapping of the timing for better fuel efficiency. The 3.2 engine is still as punchy as ever!
