  • VW v Ford.

    Hello All,

Just to spark a discussion re the Passat TDI and the New Ford Mondeo TDI- I see that the Mondeo now has a 103kw ,320 torque bewteen 1700-2200 rpm- similar to the 103 Passat. The Mondeo seems bigger in size but a slightly smaller L capacity boot- with a space saver spare. The Zetec and Titanium models TDI's seem well equiped with good advertised drive away prices.

Any views re the euro Mondeo etc up against the VW TDI's

Modeo models only come in automatic and do not carry the appeal that a passat does imho

Mondeos have TDCi while VWs have TDI's.

VWs are German built Mondeo Belgian I think
        Both value for money cars.

IMO Passat has better longer lasting design and better resales.

Having just driven a Mondeo between Queenstown and Christchurch... No contest if the latest offering is similar to the 2007

The Passat would eat the Mondeo as far as ride and handling is concerned.

              Passat Hands down,

I had the dissapointing opportunity to drive a Mondeo Wagon in Germany/Belguim/France for 4 weeks only a few months back. Boy was I happy to get back into the Passat!

Admittedly, the Mondeo was a 1.6l PETROL - Oh god this was slow. Any acceleration was lost after changing to second... actually 1st gear was pretty bad too. Getting onto the Autobarn's and getting up to 100 was measured in Minutes, not seconds!
5 Speed Manual box was ok but absolutely crap compared to a DSG box.

Again, this was a rental car so it has probably had a tougher start to life than the average car, however, fit and finish of the car was poor. In the luggage department rubber surrounds on the tie downs were lifting away and falling off. Built in Cargo mount points had fallen out of the roof mounting holes( No Barrier even installed)

Carpet around the passenger footwell was badly fitted and you could see the edges of the carpet as though it was not made big enough.
The interior finish looked cheap and easily dated.

On the plus side, the seats were very comfortable for the long distances we did.

Space wise I would put the Passat and the Modeo pretty much on par. The rear luggage compartment may be slightly larger in the Passat, but not alot.

Sure the Passat will cost you more, but you really do "get what you pay for".

do you know if the one you drove made in the same place asd the ones we get?

a few weeks ago my brother just bought a mazda 6 wagon and wanted to try the mondeo wagon but the dealer blew him off - nothing to test drive and not interested in getting a quote together . Sounds like he didn't miss much!

i drove the mazda a bit and have to say its "ok" at 39k but you can sure tell the difference with our 60k passat. no regrets on the extra 20 .
had a passat tdi. now mb c class.
