  • R36 MY10 changes.

    Hi all,

I started this thread fresh because the last degenerated to wildly speculative and plainly false information on MY10 changes.

My dealer has confirmed that one of the changes is new locking wheel nuts.

This is good for me since I was going to be ordering some Gorilla brand nuts, but probably won't have to now.

The first batch of 'MY10 s is due in about 4 weeks so Ill update with firm changes then with pictures. Any other changes that you know or hear of can be discussed here though.

    Cheers.

No --- it didn't degenerate at all, it was never a thread about MY10 changes it was about an ordered car --- it was a joke in a signature that some people indulged in and some people took seriously

This is what I've been told to expect with our MY10:
New Mk6 golf / Passat CC steering wheels for all non-R36 models. For R36's we'll get the current one.
Adaptive cruise control will be optional on R36 - but apparently still no park-assist.
        New wheel bolts as mentioned.
Self-sealing tyres apparently for all models
Lane Assist (? a lane departure warning system) will also be available.
Factory-fitted privacy glass as an option.

So all in all no major surprises, just some extra opportunities to spend more $$.

They're not self sealing... Just less likely to puncture. Already on the CC.

I want to know if ACC can be fitted to my MY09 R36. The ONLY option I would have actually ticked the box for, and it wasn't available on the R36. Park Assist is a joke! If you can't reverse park, hand in your licence...

              Regarding the self-sealing tyres:

ContiSeal seals damage from nails and screws

Developed by Continental, ContiSeal technology allows a vehicle to continue on its way even after a tire has been punctured by a screw or nail. A protective layer on the inner side of the tire tread immediately seals the puncture so that no more air can escape. The seal functions well for virtually all punctures up to 5 millimeters in diameter, which means it covers roughly 85 percent of all flats typically occurring. Sometimes, in fact, it functions so well that motorists don’t even notice that a foreign object has penetrated a tire. For this reason, Continental recommends that such tires – and all others as well – be checked regularly for nails or screws. The new, sporty Volkswagen Passat CC will be shipped exclusively with ContiSeal tires.

              Sounds like sealing to me.

              Regards,
              Michael

The thin inner wall never actually fractures, therefore there is nothing to "seal". The main rubber of the tyre tread gets punctured, yes. But the thin inner ContiSeal layer doesn't. It streches but that's it. It's a technicality I know, but you can't "seal" something that's never "open" to start with. I guess you could consider the main tyre tread puncture as being "sealed" by the inner ContiSeal layer.

Remember, marketing jargon is written so everyone understands what is meant. You can choose to take it on face value, or you can choose to learn exactly how something works. Up to you.

I think in the last 25 years of motoring in all sorts of cars and 4wd's I have had 2 punctures. I think this stuff around runs flats etc is just an excuse to sell you something more complicated.

Look at the run flats on BMW's sounds good in principle but the replacement cost defies any reason for not having a standard high performance tyre in the first place.

Oh, any word on that supercharger on the MY10?

Run flats are COMPLETELY different to the anti-puncture ContiSeal tyres... Like I said earlier, you have the choice to learn exactly how something works.

Sorry top bring back on topic . Friend ordering a regular passat had good dealings with his dealer. The dealers apparently all received a bulletin in May regarding MY10 changes. Clearly this info is something they won't indulge in prior to the complete clearance of MY09 stock .

To be honest, the MY10 changes don't make any significant differences to my order as I probably wouldn't have ticked any further options anyway. The base vehicle itself essentially remains unchanged.

Like Rocket36 I would have perhaps ticked the ACC option but it is about $2000 extra and I don't know if it was worth that to me.

Nevertheless it would be nice to know if it can be retrofitted, though I suspect it might be a factory option only.

Shame that the dealer didn't let in on this.

I would have thought the name ContiSEAL was a bit of a giveaway as to them self sealing?

Our Goal: Healthy Mobility - clean, safe and connected. Our heart beats for this. Learn more about it on our homepage.

ContiSeal™ tyres contain an innovative new technology which seals punctures in the tread area.

ContiSeal™ tyres have a sticky, viscous layer from shoulder to shoulder that instantly seals punctures caused by nails and other objects up to 5mm in diameter. The layer temporarily seals the vast majority of tyre tread punctures.
The material in the sealant layer prevents air loss even if the penetrating object becomes dislodged. As a result there is no need to stop straight away or change the tyre immediately in the event of a puncture. Despite this, the tyre should be taken as soon as possible to a tyre specialist who can examine it to determine if it needs a permanent repair.

ContiSeal™ tyres are instantly recognisable by the nail symbol on the sidewall and are compatible with all commonly available wheel rims.

ContiSeal™ tyres – the benefits at a glance:

Seals punctures in the tread area caused by penetrating objects up to 5mm in diameter
Holes are sealed even if the penetrating object becomes dislodged
Have the same high performance under normal driving conditions as non ContiSealTM tyres
No need to stop straight away or change the tyre

And if you want further proof take a look at the instructions for repairing punctures, you have to scrape back the sealant and place a permanent repair over the damage.

I want to know if ACC can be fitted to my MY09 R36. The ONLY option I would have actually ticked the box for, and it wasn't available on the R36. Park Assist is a joke! If you can't reverse park, hand in your licence...
Following on from that surely the following is true as well?
ABS is a joke! If you can't brake, hand in your license.
                              Stability control is for weaklings!
ACC is for people who can't watch the road in front of them!

The point is that advances in technology have always been ridiculed by those that don't understand them or the need for them but those advances have led onto the next rounds of advancements. ie ABS led onto stability control, is anyone going to ridicule people who own a car with stability control? Self parking is similar technology to ACC and will lead us one step further towards cars that will avoid accidents by themselves and even be able to steer around obstacles. So ridiculing people for wanting technology that makes driving safer and is a cool feature whilst they themselves drive a car that is loaded with technology is a bit rich.

ACC could be retrofitted but it wouldn't be cheap.
