PLenty of talk about the 9000 around the traps, including here. It's buggy I think is one of the main issues. Buyer beware.

As far as it being buggy I think Swallowtail is referring to the menus on the unit.
I know with the aftermarket head unit we bought from hong kong (not the avc9000 but looked very similar, same functionality and same hardware) when you're using the menus they tend to freeze/lag a little bit.

Its running windows ce, but generally the bugs are neglectable.

I was looking at the AVC9000, but I'm just not sure how it fairs sound quality wise? The sound from the head unit Dad had installed isn't as good as the stock RCD-300 or 310. It just doesn't have that oomph/depth to it like the stock.

I'm wondering if anyone who has the AVC9000 could comment/compare the sound quality to their stock units?

            Thanks,
            Cam

Yup Cam got it. THe unit is an AVC9000. Do research before buying one - they are cheap for a reason. By "buggy" I mean that there are lots of stories about issues with the units.

It's an alternative no doubt - looks great too. But as I mentioned, buyer beware... do your research and make an informed decision.

Seems this is not actually new!

                This Thread

A quick search of this Forum also revealed that there numerous threads across the various VW models about this particular device or at least mentioning it.

There is also a similar device - VW09X1 Listed on that well known auction site along with others.

Search "Passat GPS" if you are interested. Some are listed at around $560 delivered. (I have no affiliation with any listings!)

Guys i have a WD6050 (similar to the AVC9000). Had to send it back for repairs.. (battery drain and issues with the VAGCOM interface)

There is a new version out shortly.. best to see if this has fewer bugs before taking the plunge.

I think you mean CAN bus not Vagcom!

Vagcom is now known as VCDS and is a piece of software used to interact with the car via a notebook or pc sold by Ross Tech.

CAN bus is the system used in the car to communicate between modules like headunits, doors and so forth.

Oops. Yup CANBUS issues... steering wheel buttons working one day, not the next. Head unit turns off with ignition one day, not the next and so on ...

And introduced many others, if you take a look at the development of these they introduce more bugs and issues with each new version of hardware or software. They don't do any proper testing which is evident from the ridculous problems they have each time requiring hardware modification or sending the unit back to the supplier in ASIA and they add and remove features on the fly.

Often prior units don't get any firmware updates or can't be upgraded without sending back to the factory. For example all the original AVC9000 purchasers had to live with the headunit emitting a loud BEEP through the speakers every single time you pressed a button, the manufacturer implemented a fix for the new purchasers and left the old ones to live with a very annoying problem.

So don't think that by buying a unit with xyz problems that there is any guarantee that they will be fixed but there is every chance you won't be able to get them fixed without buying a new headunit.
