Can those that have an ipoo plugged in via the MDI tell me whether they ever turn it off ? Does the power in the car keep it charged up ?

I never turn the iPod off and it seems to keep mine charged up all the time.

I think you will find it depends on the model and generation of device you are using as to where it charges or not.

Use an old one and I bet you have no issues apart from small memory size.

If u are playing off the ipoo and turn off the key does the ipoo keep playing till it runs out of grunt ? do u turn the ipoo off as well ?

It turns off and goes into sleep mode. In fact, if you do not play the iPod whilst the car is on, like if you are playing the radio or the CD, then it will turn off and not turn on when required. An annoying issues.
