I have been looking into new clear coatings. There are some already used in Europe in the construction industry where NOTHING will stick to them... you can literally drop a white painted panel with this stuff into mud, pull it back out and it wont stick.

It is coming for the auto game...

You will be able to spray this stuff onto anything and it will do the trick!!

If nothing sticks to it, how does it stick to the base material?

Europeans love soft brake pads, which cover everything in dust. I've had a 2 Barinas, 2 Golfs, my Passat, and seen my old man's old Merc C210CDI, my brother's 307, and his brother-in-law's 308, and they all have had brake dust coating the wheels.

On my Barinas, I changed them at the first change to Bendix, which solved the dust problem and didn't upset the braking re fade etc for my driving style.

With the Passat, I'll just keep them OEM (maintained under a lease) and get out there with the Meguiars wheel cleaner every now and again. One good thing is that at least the dust is usually fairly easy to get off (not like train brake dust, cast iron or composite stuff which usually needs a wire brush to clean off).

So it's OK, as long as it doesn't get hot......

Its typical European pads. All Euro brands are like this, and MB are probably the worst - look at their front wheels when you have a chance to see them.

I used to combat it on a previous car, by putting on tyre shine spray on the rims. It's an oil based spray and the dust gets caught in it, but comes off easily with a wipe when you wash it. The spray also prevents road tar marring.
