  • R36 Exhaust and ECU

I'm in the process of getting an ECU upgrade, but I've been looking for an exhaust upgrade that's not loud and drummy, but more like an R32.

I've been told the standard right through system on the 36 is excellent as far as performance and efficiency is concerned. Any thoughts on whether this is correct?

I tend to believe it. That said, one company told me not to do the cat back, but if I wanted a slightly better sound, just do the rear mufflers. I tried one but it was crap - made it sound like a commadore on P plates so took it off.

    Thoughts and ideas please anyone!

I thought about the ECU upgrade and was set to do it, however the warranty issue soon stopped me

That aside if warranty isn't a big issue for you I say GO FOR IT

    I wish it was me

The warranty issue should be negated by the work being warranted by the workshop doing the ECU/tune. If they won't warrant their work you have to ask yourself, is it really worth going to them in the first place?

Alliance, I've had the ecu reflash and my tuner Martin Donnon said exactly what you were advised i.e. the 'standard' exhaust (except probably the note) does a very good job. He also said that the (standard) air intake was also very good. cheers pj

A mate of mine has the diesel turbo Passat and he got an oettinger? (I think) Apparently they honor the manufacturers warranty but you might want to check with the importer, he did say that the upgrade can't be "hidden" for servicing on an n/a car like the R36, his can being a turbo (no idea why it should be different) so it's a no go for me. Anyone know who imports them, is it Guy Harding from APR?

Thanks guys - good info and advise.

The exhaust really bugs me - and so does that guy in the blue 2 door R32 who went full bore up a hill alongside me this morning. I'm telling you, those damm things sound sooooooo good. THe R36 sounds OK, but the question is, and I'm hoping someone can offer some help - how do you get the R36 to sound like an R32??????????

Rocket, it does sound good but hard to judge. Do we know if there is any drone or drumming?
Can they fit just the rear mufflers for the better sound?

                Anyone know?

And first choice was the R32 - till I saw and drove the 36!!

I was quoted 6400 for an imported system. this is from headers back.
R32's do sound great, wished VW did the same with 36's.

Out of interest, does anybody know if an R32 style flapper mod is doable on the R36? I know I've asked before, but maybe now that people are tweaking the exhaust there might be an answer.
                      R36 =

Just to let you know, i have had the ecu upgraded by evolve technik, a custom made exhaust was fitted to my r36 by evolve technik, and they also replaced the air inctake with a Gruppe M cold air intake. All in all they did a fantastic job and the car feels much more responsive off the line and in the high end above 100km/h. There website is http://www.evolve-technik.com.au speak to Neil, i cant praise them enough for the fantastic job.

Vossy, I'm guessing the whole R36 MY10 supercharger thing may be a bit of a practicle joke by a few of the guys on here...at least it seems they're having a bit of fun with it!
