  • R36 wheel upgrade

    HI all,
just wondering all u guys that changed ur wheels, how u go with the pressure monitoring system. Was it ok to change sensors over??If so where are those sensors. I think it says its in the valves in the manual.
    Thanks for ur help.

Good point, I hadn't thought of that!
My wheels get changed to 19's next week and I'll look into it and post findings if no-one else has an answer?

Well there's a number of people (myself included) that have been informed that the pressure monitoring system isn't in the valves at all. So I'd be careful.

It's a little black box attached to the valve.

Should have taken a photo when I was getting the new tyres fitted...

The dealer told me its NOT a true pressure measuring system on these cars but instead measures over a period of time in a straight line if the wheel rotations are not the same via the wheel sensor and then reports an error.

Does anyone know if this is true or not?

Not true, the TPMS will tell you if there is a problem even when your stationary.

With the onset of Winter and lower tyre pressures we used to get notified about low pressure when we started car in the morning.

That's exactly what I have been told too. Not just by the dealer. I haven't read anything in the manual about the TPMS though (doesn't mean it's not in there somewhere). Makes sense too because with a valve system you'd be able to see the actual pressures of the tyres in the MFD I would think.

There are no problems in swapping them over to a new rim, just that you need to have a rim that allows for the fitment of this type of valve. There needs to be enough room around the valve for the nut and washer to clamp it down and enough room on the inside of the rim for the sensor to fit. The original VW rims have a small flat plane on the inside of the rim for the sensor to sit on, but I am not too sure whether this is actually required for the sensor.

You also need to get a new rubber gasket set for the valves as they are destroyed when removing them from the original rim. Get a set ordered in from your VW dealer and take them with you to the tyre fitting place for fitting when you swap them over.

there is a comment alog these lines in the manual for the tdi manual- but i think the r36 has a different system which actually measures the pressure.

I have had the wheels changed to 19's on my 2008 V6 4Motion wagon (4Motion have the full monitoring system). The tyre place knew about the TPMS and installed them on my new rims. The car shows an error that needs resetting on the MFD, refer to the manual, the same error shows when you simply change your tyres on the standard rims. I have had no problems, I know it works fine as it has alerted me recently to under-inflated tyres after I left the car in the garage for 2 weeks straight.

If the sensor measures rotational differences as a means of determining whether the tyres are low, then how would it account for corners, curves, wheel spin etc? I am sure that an average over a longish distance would be also fraught with danger as this would not necessarily be accurate especially, if you are travelling in a loop or arc.

If you are driving on the M7, for arguments sake, it basically arcs around the outskirts of Sydney and would constantly say that the inner tyres were travelling less than the outer tyres and would therefore register a difference.

I had an 06 GTI and it works via rotation method via abs sensors etc so makes sense the R36 may be the same.

US model passats do however use valve stem sensors

This is what I thought the Aussie models had and that they measured actual pressure.

NO..its actually different, the R36 has sensors in valves..different system
