Does it need to be brand new?
There are some nice 2004/05 Audi S4 Avants on the market for mid $50s which would fit the bill nicely (though admittedly that is a V8 - and obviously I was beaten to the punch on that one by qsilverza).
What about a 2006 Merc C200 Kompressor or C230 Wagon for low $50s, or a 2006 323i Touring for $55K?

Thanks for all your great comments.
I am considering second hand and I'm cruising carsales.com as I type this.
I know the Liberty is not really a bad car (there was a time when it was my dream car) but a normal automatic just doesn't do it for me any more. I've been spoiled by the DSG.Being a rep a manual is not something I could live with every day.
A wagon is still my preference but the 147 Passat doesn't have DSG. Neither does the 147 Tiguan. Damn shame about the Tiguan. Imagine rechipping that with a good exhaust and 20" wheels. What a ball tearer that would be
The V6 Highline is still too exy.
I went to Volkspower this afternoon to ask about the APR tuning gear for a Jetta and the manager gave me the keys to his brand new diesel Octavia vRS wagon. Holy crap that thing went hard and he hadn't rechipped it yet. There was bags of torque and it sounded pretty decent. There's now a 147 petrol with DSG so I'm dropping into Skoda tomorrow morning to take one for a good test drive. I know I lose the 4Motion but at least it's still a wagon with DSG and excellent build quality from what I could see. The whole resale thing is bit of a concern but Glasses puts it at 55% so it's not too bad.
The interior is really nice with great seats and the same VW feel of quality.
Because the Skoda uses the same engine as the Golf MkV there are plenty of performance mods available from APR. The guys at Volkspower assure me that with an ECU tune, full exhaust and cold air intake I'll get 188kW and 402Nm. It remains completely streetable and the DSG copes perfectly. They have a Golf MkV racecar running the APR Stage 3 kit producing 285kW and 450Nm with the factory standard DSG. That put a smile on my face.
Anyway I'll drive the RS tomorrow and let you know how it goes.-------------------------------------

If budget is the main concern ($55k is still a lot of money), then I think the Skoda vRS wagon is a winner. I know the Octavia just got a facelift too, so make sure your vRS has the new lights, etc.. From all the reviews of the vRS, it's an absolute cracker and should really do a lot to build the rep of Skoda. If people open theirs minds and give it half a chance, they might realise what a great performer it is. Even better, blow some falcodores off at the lights at check out their stunned mugs in the rear view mirror.
Or if you can sacrifice some of the performance, maybe try one of the other passat engines with DSG.
But I think you will fall in love with the vRS...

The 70's was the Muscle Car era... And Europeans just weren't as prominant as they are today.
But the joke used to go, how do you double the value of your Skoda? Fill it up at the servo! lol Even in Czechoslovakia...
