OK, here's one.. finally got around to checking the spare yesterday.. and noticed that the one supplied with the car from new has a load rating of 93V.. now I've had the car since September 2008, it's coming up for its 30,000km service, should I take it up with them and ask them why they supplied a non-compliant tyre? It's also some el-cheapo brand, Sava or something like that..

There's a bit of a story behind it - basically they'd taken the spare from my car to fix another one on the floor, and because of that they'd replaced the one in mine prior to delivery..

Time's marched on, they could argue about me replacing the tyre (which I haven't).. any tips or pointers?

      DAMN! That seriously sucks!

Do you have it documented that's what happened? Unfortunately without it, I don't like your chances...

Although if you're up front and polite about it, you could get lucky. Is the person that arranged the spare from your car pre-delivery to go on another car still at the dealership? Maybe approach them about it.

IMO it's not good enough. It should be an OEM tyre - especially if it was a brand new car!

Have you had the car since new?

I might have some documentation, I'll have to have a look for it.

The salesman is still there. I can chase him up about it. He'll probably argue that I should have checked upon delivery (bit tricky, when I collected the car at 5:50pm with a dealer closing at 6..).

I agree.. should be the same type of tyre to match the others.. the car was a demo, it had done 5,000km on delivery..

            The saga continues...

The car went in for its 30,000km service today, and I asked for a wheel alignment and balance to be done whilst there. Service done fine, but when it went to the tyre place, they advised that all four tyres are showing uneven wear across the tread, more pronounced on the inside and less on the outer. This resulted in the tyres overall wearing into an egg-shape and causing some vibration when cold (which I'd noticed and why I'd asked for the balance anyway).

They advised that one was worse than the others, but all four are showing signs... so now it looks like I'll be up for four new tyres, after about 32,000km. I'm not overly impressed - normally I get about 40-45,000km, and once had a set that lasted 65,000km - so this is the shortest tyre life I've ever had on any car.

Any recommendations on what brands to consider? I've been fairly happy with the Continentals it came with, and have a historical preference for Michelins. What else are people driving on?

I'm taking the car from Melbourne to Newcastle on Thurdsay, and if need be I'll replace them up there (once I get the OK from Fleet Partners). At least I can keep the one that's in best condition as the spare (right size, rating etc), and replace the dodgy spare from delivery, even though they've said that it's OK on the car.

so are you saying your vw dealer (I assume you had your services in one of them) had not done a good job in wheel balancing and alignment especially during the 15k service? If that's the case, I would like to know who they are... My car is due for its first service...

Actually, they have been pretty good with the alignment. It was out when first delivered, they did a balance and alignment gratis the following week, and arranged the alignment for this service on my request (sending it to a tyre/wheel shop across the road from them). When it had the 15K service it didn't need an alignment and there were no issues, but since then just about every road around my place has been dug up for rebuilding, and that hasn't helped the alignment.

All up I'm pretty happy with them, while I had some misgivings at first (particularly with getting the DSG jerking sorted), they've come to the party on just about everything since. The only thing they couldn't sort on my wish list was getting the wiper speed faster, since it's set in the factory.

DSG jerking? Isn't that just when it's cold?

Nope, mine was doing it quite badly, hot, cold or indifferent.. mechatronics module replaced a few months ago, and much better now.
