  • Rough Engine Noise on cold start (R36)

Just a quick question for fellow R36 owners...

I notice on start up every morning a really loud and rough idle... Does anyone else have this experience?

Are you referring to just VW's or all makes?

Try a '62 Austin-Healey Sprite with a BMC A-series 1110cc engine, twin SU, that hasn't run for 6 months over winter, with manual choke and a 3.5" exhaust.. then drive it on a warm day, getting vapour locks whilst running..

Just curious... why on earth would you want a 3.5" exhaust on a non-turbo 1110cc engine?

                  Ever heard of back-pressure? <jk>

Two reasons. First, it's what it had when we bought it 21 years ago..

Second, the car is slightly less visible on the road than a motorbike - the top of the windscreen is about 3 inches lower than the window line on a Polo-sized car. Hence making sure it's loud (but compliant) is one way of making sure that buses don't drive over the top. It also has big horns for the same reason.

The exhaust... It would nearly have to be bigger than the car itself

Love that noise. It is due to the idle being slightly higher on startup. You will notice the idle drops lower after a minute or so... and with it goes the lovely sound.
