I also came from a Subaru Liberty 3.0lt B Spec to a 3.2lt Passat Wagon 4 Motion and I am more than happy with the upgrade. The big difference is the extra low down torque that the Suby lacked and also the DSG gearbox is a revelation. All I can imagine is that the R36 will be an even bigger jump revelation.
both the R36 and 530i drive quite similarly - the difference is, that for $70k or so, you are buying a new R36 with 4wd, 220kw, high performance, lots of extras or a 3 to 4 yo 530i with no extras. Still, the BMW drives well, looks great and goes pretty well. I bought the R36.
you can get a tv tuner from o/s therefore not sue if it works here. as for seperate inputs none that are easy to access. not sure on the back side of the unit.....
the AWD system is mostly front wheel drive this is a good description of it :
As soon as differences in the speeds of rotation between the front and rear axles occur two annular piston pumps are activated which build up pressure in the multi-plate coupling (Haldex system) thus "coupling" the two axles to each other. The transmitted torque can be varied by adjusting the pressure on the coupling plates, thus controlling the flow of power between the front and rear axles. The coupling provides an infinitely variable torque transfer between the front and rear axles. In extreme cases up to 100 percent of the available torque can be transmitted to the rear axle. In the normal case with the vehicle travelling in a straight line at a constant speed with no differences in the wheels' grip, 90 percent of the available torque is transmitted to the front axle and ten percent to the rear axle. The Haldex coupling is driven by the propshaft.
OK guys drove the R36 wagon and was impressed...so much more enjoyable than the 325i...and it didn't seem like I was driving a wagon...felt so much like a sedan.
It was quick, heaps of bottom end torque, comfortable, roomy and beautifully weighted steering...not to mention those seats...sensational and a great steering wheel.
I had no intention of considering the wagon but after seeing it and then the sedan...to be honest the wagon is nicer looking and will be more practical than the sedan. I just know if I order the sedan I will regret later not getting the wagon.
One thing I did notice the wagon was a 09 spec, and had a different instrument cluster compared to the sedan which was 08, the wagon had the minor guages inset into the speedo & tacho and the MFD display between them was so much better in white than compared to the sedan...it made the old cluster look dated.
So that being said if I want to order a new one that has to be built with the options I want...it is a 5 month wait...holy crap...
Anyway dealer will come back to me this week but what sort of money are you guys paying for a wagon with Sunroof, Sat Nav, Dynaudio and auto tailgate?
With respect to the Dynaudio Package...is it just the speakers that are upgraded from the standard audio system, or does the Dynaudio Package include upgraded amplification as well?
The standard audio is 250W 8 channel amp with 10 speakers, the Dynaudio is 600W 10 channel amp with 10 Dynaudio speakers. I have Dynaudio at home and they are great speakers although different ranges can sound vastly different. All great quality but the overall sound is different. I never compared the two but I am happy enough with the standard system. My home system cost half as much as the car so I don't expect the same from the car system.
Had the sedan for 1 week now and extremely happy with the performance. Fuel disappears quickly but at least its cheaper than 6 months ago. Seats are awesome, perfect support when cornering but very comfortable. The 4motion transfers the power so well to the road. A great value car.
I would forget the Dyna Audio it is not worth the money... I too have done the exercise with the BMW Touring 3 and 5 series.. The poor audi's just don't have the power so they where dismissed...
The R36 represents the best value for money given what your choices are and against BMW once you adding the extra's you are looking northward of 100K.
Plus the R36 will eat up most cars on the road..
p.s. I have just had the MDI cable installed while it took them 2 trips to the work shop to get it fixed it was well worth the money....

I agree, i don't know if the Dyna Audio is worth it also, I'm pretty happy with the standard audio system that comes with the 09 model

VASR36 and R36Driver888, I can only assume that you haven't heard the Dynaudio system in a passat? I have it, I compared it to the standard system, and whilst I agree it is a lot of money, it is totally worth it!! amazing sound that has the highest of highs and lowest of lows, and every amazing little bit in between!!! ( I sound like a salesman)
It probably depends on what type of music you like listening to and at what sort of volumes whether you can appreciate the real difference.

2010 MY10.5 R36 Wagon, Biscay Blue, RNS510, Dynaudio, Sunroof, towbar, Dynamic Chassis Control, No lazy back door
2008 Audi Q7 4.2TDI, Radar Cruise, Lane Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Heated Seats Front & Rear, Alcantara Hood Lining, Wooden Gear knob, Nappa Leather, Plus all the usual V8TDI gear, like 760nm of Torque!
The VW sales people at Austral VW told me not to waste my money... and I agree it really does depend on what type of music and how loud you play it to get the true value... I am still enjoying the music from engine and the back end...
in my experience it all depends on what the dealer has in stock, if the model on the floor has the dynaudio, its the greatest audio experience in the world....if it doesn't, its not worth the money...fwiw, i ticked the box...
Thanks Guys for your feedback...I have ordered a R36 wagon in blue
Found 09' spec in the country with all options including dealer fitted blue tooth, except Dynaudio...they tell me there were NO blue wagons in the country with Dynaudio...if I wanted this I would have to wait 5 months...and simply couldn't because of the tax incentive to small business.
Should have it in two weeks...please tell me I won't be disappointed...
Not sure if this has been asked before but can I get an after market Square Hitch tow bar fitted?
And what happens with the reversing sensors when reversing with a trailer...do they work or just go crazy?
Mobs like Hayman Reese...do they even make a square hitch for a Passat?
