Aahh.. times change and what a small world it is too

I'm coming from a mildly modified 2004 WRX STi

I've always liked the R36 but the CC really caught my eye, the spec sheet is fantastic and plenty of top-spec features for the price.

Roh, did you test-drive the R36 vs. the CC? What were your impressions, coming from a WRX you're the best benchmark yet

          Psyk,

I haven't driven an R36. As you know their is no characteristic burble from the exhaust that all wrx drivers know so well. The cabin was very quiet, and a significantly better place to be than the rex.

To compare the cc to the rex for performance would be unfair. Fully forged motor, running a 400HP turbo, aftermarket computer and so on. It has easily out-accelerated an rs4 in 2nd and 3rd gear. You wont be blown away by the cc performance coming from a mildly modded STi.

After 3 yrs of ownership I have no interest in the wrx type of power delivery- nothing under 3500rpm, something up to 4000rpm, and then a great rush to 7000rpm. The cc does need more power, and torque, to really make it an exciting car. The suspension needs something done up the front to stop the front from lifting when accelerating.

Apart from an increase in performance the cc or R36 make my wrx feel like a 'teenagers' car. The build quality, interior, exterior, std equipment, options list, ability to soak up rough road, and the lack of rattle, tyre noise, exhaust noise, makes it a far better car.

Thats interesting considering the R8 has around 90kw more with signif more torque.

In a dead straight line, the Clubby wins. But around a tight track with a short straight I was faster than the naturally aspirated HSVs.

So yeah, it beats the R36 in only ONE thing - straight line speed. But not off the line. The 4 Motion and launch control kicks it's arse off the mark!

so are you saying you have tracked your car against HSV's or are you comparing lap times?

It was at http://www.mdtc.com.au/ which is only a small track... I wasn't timing but was catching and passing HSVs in the corners. I couldn't catch them down the straight but could out break and out handle them.

I had three seperate people passenger in my car who all also did laps in a VE GTS with $10,000 of bolt on mods (still naturally aspirated) and all three said my car was faster around the track. Although a lot of that would have to do with my driving - very smooth.

I'm now at about 1800km on the clock after 4 weeks of ownership. Picked it up on a Friday and was on the track two days later. So wasn't even red lining it at the track day!

so was it a driver training course you were on?

you might want to post your experiences in the thread by Alfie who was asking if anyone had tracked their car. sounds like you must be a pretty good driver if others were commenting.

It was a driver training course, yes.

Yeah, I've raced cars before... If I had have had time, I'd have had a wheel alignment done and a whole lot of negative camber added to the front. But it performed brilliantly for a stock factory car.

I'm waiting until after June to post an entire thread on the R36. A full review including the track day and pictures.

is that normal for a driver training course? every one I have done give you some track time to practice the skills you have learned through the day, but it is certainly not under race conditions and definitely no overtaking. surely you were not insured that day?

Correct. Only insured when under instruction. Less chance of serious damage on a track though. Just drive within the limits of yourself, the car, and the conditions.
