I have used this a couple of times now- it works as advertised pretty well.

    BUT i reckon it needs an audible gong (in addition to the MFD which does all this stuff) to tell you certain things;

    1. its found the spot you can fit into.
    2. go from reverse to drive ( after backing into the spot)
    3. after going forward and its decided its finished and you need to take over.

otherwise you need to look at the MFD a lot and not whats going on around you.

i used it in a busy street last night ( the wife beside me with her hands over the face!), the swing out at the front went REAL close to a car coming the other way.

she is still too scard to use it .

the gong could be done as a software updgrade so i wonder who at VW would listen ?

    Hey mate,

Not sure it I have miss unserstood you, but don't you get any sound or beeps from the Park assist at all?
I have the MFD showing how close you are but I also have beeps coming from the rear car speakers if there is an obsticle at the back and from the front speakers if there is an obsticle at the front.

yes i get the parking beepers as usual, but i reckon a separate "gong" would be great to tell you when it thinks you've gone far enough.

in particular last night i went into drive, the wheel was turned left to finalize and then i went further forward and it had disengaged and was steering for the curb. no doubt the mfd had already told me it was all done but the gong would have been clearer.

The closeness of the car coming the other way is the driver's responsibility whether you are parking or its parking itself.

You need the remote park where it parks itself without you in it.!

Personally I find the Remote Park worrying. What control do you have if a kid suddenly runs into the path of the car? I don't think there is much manual override available from the remote as opposed to a driver in the car. I just don't feel this is a viable function, IMHO.

Hi bennobee, yes you're right for Park Assist. But for Remote Parking (new feature not out yet), you get out of the car and watch it park bum first into a car park. Search youtube and you'll see a video of it. It's crazy if you ask me.

Yes, I wonder who would be liable if the car hit someone/something. The driver(?), the owner or VW? I think with Park Assist, VW cover themselves by saying that you as the driver still need to watch what is happening and take control if needed. With Remote Park though, I don't think you have this control. So if it drives your car into another car due to a faulty sensor/logic issue or knocks a kid over because it's too small to detect, what happens?!? I don't think the world needs (or is ready for) Remote Parking. IMHO.

I'm getting Park Assist with my MY09 B6, I think that'll be enough for my brain to handle. tryingavw, I wonder if anyone has ever made such a request to VW about Park Assist. I agree that audio cues would be very useful, considering they advise you to watch the car and what's around you (How do you do that and watch the MFD at the same time?).

by jerking your neck around between them which semi defeats the purpose. - you've got to keep an eye out for cars from behind ( trying to pass so you need to stop) and from the front (only in skinny streets)

one really good thing: it consistently parks the car about 10cm from the kerb so is good for the rims.

even with these proviso's i am really impressed with it . i plan to setup a couple of cars in a side street and get the wife to practice using it.

I was wondering about this. That's fantastic! Yes, no need to worry about my wife wrecking the rims now! Unless she goes nose in first!

Can't understand why it's not an option for the R36.

I'm glad to hear its working well for you

It seems VW's Park Assist is more fullproof than the Lexus version

FYI VW is also working on a reverse parallel version for supermarkets etc

The driver controls the braking and acceleration it is upto to them to decide whether to continue or not.

I believe it is because the steering is mechanical, not electric in the R36, and so the park assist cannot be bolted on as easily.

Could be wrong, but believe that is the case?

Hi Ben, I just read that the Remote Parking feature (where the driver steps out of the car and allows the car to park itself) can be controlled via remote control. Also there are additional cameras that monitor the progress and changes, so maybe this will be a viable option in future. We will have to wait and see though.
