  • Issues with wifes Passat very frustrating

Hoping one of the guru's here can help me.Car is awesome but i have two niggling issues nobody can resolve.

    1) Intermittent non starting. At least once a week the car refuses to start like the imoobiliser won't disengage, had the keys recoded but it still occurs. The fix is to disconnect battery and wait 10 minutes and reconnect and its all good for another week or so.

    2) Very rough idle, enough to shudder the whole car, some days worse than others. Car has been serviced and timing belt changed along with vacuum hoses but the issue still occurs. There are also 6 chimes when the ignition is switched on.

Help me as otherwise car is perfect but my wife is so pee'd off that she is ready to ditch it for a dodgy falcodore or even worse a magna!

    Cheers

I doubt the intermittent starting problem is related to the immobiliser. A VAG engine will start up fine, regardless of immobiliser status, but if there is an immobiliser problem the engine then cuts out (within 2-3 secs) and the immobiliser symbol (key underneath car) lights up (and sometimes displays an error msg as well).

Are there any warning symbols or msgs to go with the "6 chimes when the ignition is switched on" ?

Maybe take your car to a VW specialist to get it looked at by someone who knows what they are doing, an unreliable car that you can't depend on is very frustrating.

You could always let your missus have your GTI and you drive the Passat until you get the Passatt fixed, that will give you some incentive to fix it very quickly

Could be a dirty MAF or throttle body for the rough idle. Do a VAGCOM to check the codes, that may help narrow down the areas to check.

For the chimes, is it the service reminder? Maybe it was not reset when you took it into service previously.

Sounds very much like a coolant temp sensor. Check if it is a black one get rid of it and replace with a Green one from Dub.
