  • 1.8T or V6??

    Hi all,

I not sure if this is the right forum to post this. Our trusty Vento is about to be passed down to number one son when he gets his licence in a few months. Therefore she who must be obeyed will be needing a new ride.

I am strongly considering a 6-8 year old Passat and the wagon/variant version is high on the list.

The question is: Do we get a 1.8T or a V6?

Also I am also strongly considering buying an auto for the first time in the history of our VW ownership. Is this a risk in higher mileage cars?

What do you guys recommend? I am keen on the 1.8T (cheaper rego and her indoors is quite happy with the grunt/economy of the Vento so 1.8T should be comparable). However there seems to be some very competitively priced V6 Passats around, even Syncros for less than $15,000.

Any positive comments would be appreciated.

Pretty much if you look in the Audi section where the same question has been asked about the A4, same thing really but i would say the Passat is cheaper and great value, I myself was looking at Variant probably around the 02 mark. Like you will see in the other section all the woes are pretty much covered. To answer the Auto question , well its ZF5hp mate and they are strong, however must be looked after. They dont have a service interval but i would recommend at least around 80-100k they should have a strainer and oil change , which will warrant a new pan gasket. V6 bullet proof and 1.8t great and both when looked after will go to the moon and back. Ah other thing about the Auto, the radiator is where the oil cooler is and can fail , causing coolant to enter the trans, really that takes the usual dillegence when checking your levels regularly.
Hope this helps , great car IMO
    Cheers
