DSG Fixed

This follows on from threads "DSG need a physio" and in the Golf thread "DSG tried to Kill me".

After three days got the Passat back from VW and I have to say its a completely new car. They replaced the mechtronics in the vehicle and now it runs like a dream. It is absolutely amazing the difference in the vehicle its a completely different car. Now I understand why people rave about how good the DSG is.

We had to go through a few steps, the first being getting the dealer to recognise there is a problem. VW then advised the dealer to do a software upgrade. If the upgrade does not work then VW replaces the mechtronics. So for people who have the same problem persist with VW to get the issue resolved.

This has absolutely nothing to do with driving style or turning off A/C or taking the car out of D and putting it in S and having one foot slightly on the break while slowing excellerating or reading the owners manual as apparently there is a section in there that tells me I need to be driving the car completely differently as suggested in the previous threads. You should be able to put your car in D have the A/C going listening to music and drive. Its that simple.

I know that a few people on here have the same issue and I hope this helps to get your issue fixed.

One more thing I really want to give Lennock Motors Canberra a big thumbs up for the excellent service that we received. 10/10 couldnt ask for better.

I have a small question on the DSG, in manual mode, I found that when you want to change down a gear or two, it is best to lift off the gas? or else it will be somewhat jerky or over rev? Or is it my driving method that is incorrect?

This doesn't happen to me - tne change is quite smooth. It shouldn't over rev. In fact, it shouldn't change down at all until the car's road speed/revs match the range allowed.

So..say when you are in D driving at 100km/h on the freeway and wanting to overtake, you use the paddle behind the steering to shift down a gear, you don't have to let go of the gas and should be expecting a smooth gearchange?

Smooth in what sense?
Any gear change in that scenario is going to be asking for a lot more revs so will seem much less smooth than going up the box.

It should drop a gear and if you haven't given it more gas, you'll encourage some engine braking... if you keep your foot in it, it should drop back and pin you to your seat... at least that is what my GT does.

When you say "smooth" yes it should be relatively smooth but remember if you don't take your foot of the gas (As you shouldn't) you will be doing the same speed but in a lower gear. Therfore the rev's are going to go up and it will give a bit of a jerk. The level of your "jerk" will depend on what you are asking of the car. For example if you are in 5th or 6th and doing 100km/h and go down one gear it shouldn't really jerk around at all. However if you are belting the arse off the car and coming into a corner and braking and you drop down a gear when the tacho hits about 4,100 rpm (You can't change down unless you are at 4,100 or less) you will feel some jerks. If you did the same thing in a "true" manual you would get the same feeling.

I have a 125 TDi wagon on order (will be built in March 09 and delivered around May 09). Really hoping the DSG is as smooth as it should be. Wonder if I will get the corrected module/software from the start. Fingers crossed.

Anyone with a MY09 125 TDi CR care to comment about their DSG.

generally very good, but on a few occassions i caught it in "sleep" mode ( wrong gear?) heading into an intersection and its taken a few seconds to engaged the right gear and get going. felt like the engine had stalled -bit scary.

also i find the sports mode is good but holds onto lower gears too aggresively.

no sign at all of any whiplash like the others were having.

Get your car looked at as it should not be doing this at all if your DSG is functioning properly. When we firt got the car the first thing we noticed was the limp/sleep mode mainly into oncoming traffic (gets the old heart racing) but by the time we came to the 15k service the car was doing the whiplash as well...


And nting this is my personal opinion.... I believe that VW are fully aware of the DSG issue in some of their vehicles. As there seems to be only a small percentage of cars with this problem, the solution is to replace the faulty mechatronics when the problem arises. So more than likely your car will not have the DGS issue and you will have many happy Km's of driving.

I think every DSG owner should read this...some good info

there is massive (interweb driven) hype around DSG failure and how much it costs, yet there are so few cases of ACTUAL failure apart from some issues in the early TT boxes.

If you talk to any VW mechanic (dealer or non) who has to deal with this stuff on a day to day basis, they will tell you.

Its expensive to replace the box but it isn't 25k like someone mentioned haha
