Hmmm... iphone uses 5V charging not 12V, but the MDI is apparently good for 5V charging, so it should charge. Was that using an MDI USB socket > iPhone cable, or the MDI's "proper" Ipod cable?

does it state if the iPod cable is iPhone and iPhone 3g compatible?
Word from VW..."Yep, it works fine. 5V usb charging.""
And from here:
"The MDI aka Media-In by VW supports 5v iPod USB charging. However that requires the MDI iPod cable (p/n 000 051 446 C). I think you should carry this OEM part since 09 VW's with NAV already have iPod integration. They just need that special cable."Last edited by Swallowtail; 22-04-2009, 02:46 PM.

I didn't do enough research
So I was dissappointed with what I got for over $300 worth of ipod connection. The only good thing is it charges the ipod as it sits in the glove box, the aux port doesn't do that. Other above have covered the details on what youget or don't get quite well. I would love to knoe if you can upgrade the software on the satnav to allow for better ipod integration on the screen?Billcat: R36 09 Biscay blue sedan, sunroof, satnav, bluetooth, Ipod connection and tints - Love that car!!

I too bought my R36 from Austral and find them very below par when it comes knowledge.... They broke my bonnet leaver during pre delivery...MY09 White R36 Wagon with all the trimmings

OK, the word from VW is a little less vague but still not definitive. I guess until I get the car and start playing I won't know 100% for sure. What they told me:
1. The new 5V charge Apple devices will charge from the MDI using the iPod cable.
2. An iPhone 3G should play audio into the RNS510 using the MDI, but will not be RNS510 screen controllable / display tracks etc like an iPod does. I would imagine that an iPod Touch would be the same. He was unable to tell me if the 4th gen Nanos would work.
<shrugs> we'll see when I get it I guess.
