Been doing some reading and with the iPod cable the MDI should work with iPhone... :-/ seems odd.

Hmmm... iphone uses 5V charging not 12V, but the MDI is apparently good for 5V charging, so it should charge. Was that using an MDI USB socket > iPhone cable, or the MDI's "proper" Ipod cable?

does it state if the iPod cable is iPhone and iPhone 3g compatible?

Word from VW..."Yep, it works fine. 5V usb charging.""

        And from here:

"The MDI aka Media-In by VW supports 5v iPod USB charging. However that requires the MDI iPod cable (p/n 000 051 446 C). I think you should carry this OEM part since 09 VW's with NAV already have iPod integration. They just need that special cable."

          I didn't do enough research

So I was dissappointed with what I got for over $300 worth of ipod connection. The only good thing is it charges the ipod as it sits in the glove box, the aux port doesn't do that. Other above have covered the details on what youget or don't get quite well. I would love to knoe if you can upgrade the software on the satnav to allow for better ipod integration on the screen?

What did you get - iPod connection or MDI? MDI integrates with sat nav. You can get MDI for retrofit.

Hmmm well..... i didnt check the charging of the phone but it sure didnt work on the MDI. I have the MDI with the correct Ipod cable which works well with my nano gen 1 and gen 3 and my ipod classic.

After getting a very vague and useless answer from Austral, I've sent an email to VW Aus to see if they are able to give us a definitive answer on what devices are supposed to work... will post back when I hear from them.

I too bought my R36 from Austral and find them very below par when it comes knowledge.... They broke my bonnet leaver during pre delivery...

OK, the word from VW is a little less vague but still not definitive. I guess until I get the car and start playing I won't know 100% for sure. What they told me:

                    1. The new 5V charge Apple devices will charge from the MDI using the iPod cable.
                    2. An iPhone 3G should play audio into the RNS510 using the MDI, but will not be RNS510 screen controllable / display tracks etc like an iPod does. I would imagine that an iPod Touch would be the same. He was unable to tell me if the 4th gen Nanos would work.

                    <shrugs> we'll see when I get it I guess.

                      Hmmm....

This page shows an RNS510 with an iPhone 3G working fine and dandy...

I sat in geads car and witnessed his iPhone working properly via the MDI. Full touchscreen access to all iPod features.

My employer final got their act together so it'll be around late September early October.
I've waited this long so I'm cool with it. This is the first time I've been able to exercise this much patience.

Yoikes. Mine was ordered in March and is due in July...

                              Patience is over-rated.
