AFS inoperative

Have a 4 motion with Bi exons.

keep getting a warning saying afs inoperative with a light bulb warning light also flashing.

The car went to the dealer on Monday and they said they "fixed it". Warning light back on again this morning and the car was dropped at the dealer again at 8am to have a new MFD installed and power window motor, I mentioned how this warning light has come on again, ans showed them before turning the vehicle off.

Has anyone had anything similar happening?

The lights usually due the "dane" when you trun them on. This doesnt happen so it is obviously a fault somewhere.

I believe it is only on cars with the bi exons.

Rang VW assist and I think it meant Autu Focus System.

The error message says refer to owners manual, but have spent time looking and cannot find it.

AFS (Adaptive Front lights System) is the system that illuminates corners by turning the lights as you turn the steering wheel. It is my understanding that on tighter corners the halogen light (for whichever way you are turning) will come on as well.

Edit: AFS is only on Passats (and possibly other models) equipped with Bi-Xenons.

After picking the car up yesterday afternoon, I have been told that they have found the fault. They had to take the front bumper of and track, and test all lights wires that were associated with the lights.

It was found that on of the light modules was faulty and keep shutting the focusing system down. The lights still work, they just don't do the alignment dance.

Hopefully this will solve the problem once the part arrives.

is the dance for self levelling or for some find of focussing? pretty cute.

I think that the dance does both, it levels and focuses.

When you turn them on the go up, down, left right than stop.

Impresses those around at night!!

If this is still a problem - get them to search for a technical bulletin on this.

The original harness gets pulled when the lights move and there is a repair to stop this.

I have the same setup in my R36...

What the HID lights do when you start the car (whether the lights are on or not) is a self leveling check to determine what height to set themselves at. They go all the way down, out, in, and back up to the level suitable based on the load in the car. Any weight in the back or the boot is going to mean the nose of the car is higher and without a self leveling calibration every time, the lights could end up pointing at oncoming traffic and dazzling other drivers. It's why it's illegal to have HIDs without a self leveling, projector headlight system.

i dont care what they're doing it just looks really cool !

btw i have fitted philips extreme xenon bulbs in place of the turning halgens and they really add to the overall illumination .

no they at the same level as the main lamps, behind the glass.

turn on the engine and low bem, then turn on the indicator ( or turn the wheel) you will see the extra halogen come on.

i think you are thinking about front fog lights in the bumper? ( i dont have them they are an option)

no i don't have fog lights (R36) and the front light assembly where the indicator is is twice as wide as the indicator... bugger it, i'll go out to the garage and check now. brb lol

ok - yup! it's the hallogen in the main assembly that sits sorta behind the parker.

Speaking of the parker. Tried to change over to white LED globes and they come on briefly but then go off. Put the normal globes in and they don't come back on until I restart the car.

I'm thinking the car must think with such little power being drawn by the LED that it's blown so cuts power to it. Anyone have any ideas?
