wrx --> R36

Hi all,

Currently have a highly modified wrx 03 model. Not long ago purchased a touareg for the wife. Its a very nice cabin to be in. I am strongly considering selling the rex and getting a R36, as i want something with a nice interior, that has balls. A few weeks ago, I was close to getting the FPV FG F6, but no matter how hard I tried I could not get use to the exterior. Also the power delivery was extreme- under tired and rwd.

Has anyone on here driven a wrx/ sti, care to make a comparison?

easiest way would be call your nearest VW dealer to see if you can organize a test drive? then you can make your own judgements

Yes, no comparison. R36 is worth the coin, especially when compared to the latest STI spec R. Don't get me wrong, the spec R is brilliant, but the R36 is in another league for comfort with performance to match.

I agree with PoloGTIBoy. Given what you are currently used to (03 WRX), you are the only person who can decide whether a na 3.6l V6 in a much heavier vehicle is going to satisfy you. They are too much like chalk and cheese.

Can you stretch it another 10-15K and check out the 135i.

You seem to be in the somewhat enviable position of not really needing a bigger car (you do have the 2rag already). You just want some German prestige and refinement, right.

Some say the 135i is a better, more involving drive than the M3!

absolutely, this is a given. Though I find it interesting hearing other peoples experiences also. There is a VW dealership in brookvale/ sydney, so I will hopefully pay them a visit in the next week or two.

Your pretty good in your analysis

I checked out the 135i approx 6 months ago. It had for me the perfect driving position, and an excellent gearbox. It just was not practical. i do have a young son, so 4 drs and more leg space in the back was necessary. If i was selfish, i would probably wait for the 370z next yr.

I owned a WRX (04) for a short period of time, and think it was a cracking car.

Firstly it has nothing on the R36 for comfort and goodies. The interior of the R is just a great place to spend hours. The front pews are as good as the WRX in my opinion. The dash is a work of art compared to the 03 Wrx

In relation to power delivery they are completely different. The WRX was on or off the power, with significant turbo lag. The R36 is very linear in its power delivery so can be driven sedately or pushed hard and either way delivers an enjoyable experience.

Obviously it is a big change from a manual to the DSG, and unfortunately whilst the DSG is one of the best "auto" boxes in the market, it still lacks the involvement of a full manual. Make sure when you test drive the car that you drive it in "D" and "S" as they are completely different. When in "S" mode the car will reward you with downshifts, blips on the throttle (and bigger fuel bills!).

I have had my R36 for 6 months, and cannot recommend it highly enough. As practical transport that is understated (people dont think you are in the DOOF DOOF crowd) and puts a smile on the face of anyone who drives it there isn't much out there for the money.

Drive one and see what you think, but I am sure you will love it.

Yeh, the rex's are a fun car to drive, but as you said, the turbo lag wears thin. Its running an AVO 400L turbo, and very little happens under 3700rpm. It is also a bit showey, and I would like a more 'classier' and unassuming car.
Once I take an R36 for a drive I will post my experience.
