  • Aftermarket SATNAV that uses VW touchscreen?

I seriously tossed up whether to get the RNS510 but and extra 3 grand plus LCT, I couldnt justify the price, and as far as I am concerned, neither can VW.

Other car makers charge less than half what VW does... absolute rip off.

There are aftermarket systems that replace your entire head unit, but does anyone know of any SATNAV systems which can utilise the colour touch screen that comes standard with the 2009 spec passat?

I really like the touch screen that comes standard, especially the Optical parking sensor display, so I dont want to lose this, I just want a decently priced Sat Nav without having to worry about someone breakin in to the car when they see the SATNAV holder or suction cup marks on the windscreeen.

    satnav rip off

i understand you may think 3g's is a rip off, but most car manufacturers charge 2-3k anyway. ( porsche had a deal where you got a "free" 7k satnav with the 911 recently) plus the vw unit has a big screen, faster processor, and includes 30gb hard drive you can put music on to. plus a memory stick slot and aux input. I agree its expensive, but relatively its average.

I am waiting on my my09 wagon with satnav so of course i would say that! But with the wagon, you also get a reversing camera and guidance marks for backing. The one thing not included is bluetooth, which will be another ( expensive option). So these are really usefull things.

so i agree, but its actually better value than most. there is also a thread for a 3rd party unit which has lots of goodies included on this site somewhere.

Finally, if you do decide to go for it, best to get it factory fitted i reckon.

this must be new with the my09. in which case it does lessen the additional value of the satnav.

Yes, the head unit is exactly the same as the RNS510 for the MY09. It just doesnt have the SATNAV functionality (including rearview camera, DVD and harddrive)

I still think 3k is a rip off as the screen and interface are already standard, its just the GPS and DVD units that they need to link up to the standard unit.
many other manufacturers charge half this amount (and make a tidy profit)and they replace the whole unit, including the screen.
I simply cant justify the price which is unfortunate as i would have signed up it it was a reasonable price.

That said teh amout Porsche and BMW charge for their units is a complete joke... 7 grand!

The unit is actually only an "RCD 510" which looks similar to the "RNS 510", but that stops at the screen only.

behind the screen (and you will also notice its missing several buttons) it has a 6 stack CD unit instead of the Nav brain.

              P.S. 3k is good - Audi on some models it is 6k - 9k.

If you bought a 20k car I would agree, but you bought a quality Passat, so you need a quality NAV!

Guy, you can prob confirm....Arent there stilll bugs with the RNS510, mostly related to bluetooth etc?

If it was a faultless unit then i would jump on board, but ive heard there are issues, and at 3k i dont expect issues

Well picked out, I hadn't noticed the extra buttons

What I cant get out of my head is that I can pay $500 for a top of the line Tom Tom or Navman (with real time traffic updates) and while I would love the convenience of an in-dash system, paying an extra 600% for the convenience, I just cant justify.... and more importantly, cant justify it to the wife.

I do envy those who did justify it, but right now, I have too many things to spend the $2500 on (mortage, home. race bike, etc).

Main thing is at least when I get lost, I will be in a car that is worth getting lost in

No bugs to my knowledge on the RNS510 - its pretty sorted, we have sold an awful lot & had a very low percentage of manufacturing defects.

Now bluetooth is a completely different matter.

Factory bluetooth - which of the 7 versions? - they are all different, what you need to understand is its more of a phone by phone difference problems, rather than the bluetooth directly.

Now non "factory" units, there are probably 30 odd on the market - I couldn't even comment on those!

Good point, I don't think an OEM will ever be able to supply Navigation as cheap and as up to date as someone like Tom Tom or Navman, and the price vs number sold is obvious.

Saying that a second hand tom tom is worth nothing (and they out date themselves every couple of months) , but a fully integrated unit (IMHO) will always add value to the resale of a vehicle!

                        RCD 510 retro fit

                        Slightly off topic but,

has anyone looked into, or even better, retro-fitted the RCD 510 touchscreen to a MY08 R36?.

                        Thanks

                            Guy,

What price, and what functionality do you get? I am interested in whether the bluetooth will work, the buttons on the wheel work and whether the MFD communicates with the unit, as per the factory install.

Also can the Reverse Camera be installed at the same time?

If you have a brochure or can PM me more details I will get back to you.

                            Cheers,

                              Sorry,

There is no brochure on the unit as its factory fitted (genuine VW part) - Bluetooth is an entirely different computer controller.

You can do reverse camera, but that really gets price prohibitive.
