Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New love for Passats

    Made the road trip today to pick up the Passat that was for sale on ebay. Got it home and it's pretty dirty and dusty, but in excellent condition.
    I actually bought it to use as parts for my mk2 golf gti 16v but after driving it and seeing how good it is I'm just going to register and drive it(and garage and work on the golf).
    I'm still in shock how good it is, got a bit of a sluggish motor and a few squeaks and rattles, but that'll all be fixed soon.
    I've already put some 17's avanti cospas on it that I've had lying around.

    Love the car, Man! I saw it on ebay and had I had the time and the $$s I would have been bidding against you. Would be excellent with a 1.9 Tdi and diesel 5 speed in it!
    The only thing I don't like about the model is its full frontal. The nose just doesn't work for me. Everytig else does, though! Pics of the inside??

      Interior is the worst part, it's all there but it's dirty and dusty. Spent most of sunday just cleaning it, and the fabric on the seats and door trims isn't the nicest but it's livable. Headlinging is hanging down and dirty. I might make a new one myself, as I've done for my golfs in the past.
      Still needs a lot of cleaning work done to it. And worst luck between the time I first saw it to when I picked it up a whole bottle of craft glue got spilled on the back seat and there's a lovely rug glued to the passenger side rear seat. I'm slowly dissolving the glue with ecalyptus oil, any suggestions.
      I've gotta agree with you about the full frontal shots but at that price who could refuse. Although in it's defence it has a pretty cool/mean looking lower chin spoiler, unfortunately you can't see it in the picture.

        To get acrylic paint or craft glue off use alcohol, like methylated spirits.

        Love the Passat, really under appriciated car hare in Aus.

          Would the metho leave stains or strip the color out of the fabric?

            Bodywork looks in great condition tho...

            If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

              Nice car for the price - that's 2 B3s on ebay recently! Is it a private import, or is it one of the Aussie compliance cars? I owned a white 1991 model 16v 5sp sedan here like yours that was the Aussie spec.

              You might find that the 16v is gutless on our fuel - have you tried 98RON? The reason I ask is when I had mine I tried an airbox mod and a chip from Neuspeed to try to make it go a bit better but it didn't really work. We only had 95RON back then, though. The Passat is heavier and probably has taller gearing than the Golf the engine was originally intended for, but still the Euro test reports I read gave pretty good acceleration figures.

              I nearly bought another B3 (yeah, I'm a sucker for oddball VWs and Audis...) which was a tired, red 16v wagon about 18mths ago.

                Yes it's an Aussie delivered car. I think I'll just service it get it roadworthy, do a KR cam swap, maybe an exhaust. And drive it!!! can't wait to have it on the road. I'm still in shock how nicely it sits on the road.

                  Then it's one of 3 1990 models delivered. Pwr windows are not on door pulls like the '91s and no side repeaters like 1991s. Also trim slightly different.

                  I'm sure I've seen this car advertised somewhere like Unique Cars ages ago (Vic 'ENZ' part of no plate familiar).

                  It's identical to the car Motor and Wheels tested, too. I'll see if I can find and scan the tests, if you like.

                    That'd be cool if you could find that stuff. Yeah this car doesn't have power windows, might have to investigate an upgrade in that department. Afterall it is a luxury european car.

                      I have had a couple of 2 litre 16Vs in the UK and they all ran pretty good on 95 octane fuel.

                      I reckon the KR cam would be a good idea. You can buy chips from ebay.de for next to nothing that are supposed to be OK. A few lads on the Corrado-forum.net have had them.

                      I had a G60syncro and that had 'keep fit' windows in the back and lecky up front.

                      Tight spec I thought when it had heated leather and aircon too.

                        Be careful about buying chips from overseas as they may not be compatible with Aussie spec ECUs.
