Passat B1, 4A-GE:1.6l 20v

as u can guess by the title i was looking up engine with a bit more power for my B1 passat 1975, was wondering if any of you knew if the toyota 4A-GE:1.6l 20v would be a good engine to fit,

please reply on what you think, if it would cost too much, too much of a hassle, or if its not worth it, please comment and give me some ideas, any constructive information would be appreciated, thnx guyz

I think it's too much hassle and not worth it.

It would be easier to fit an upgraded VAG engine. This could be a cheaper one like a 1.8 from a mk 3, to something more expensive and powerful, like a 1.8 KR 16V (139HP standard), and if you really want to do all out, you could do a 20VT conversion.

I don't see the need to put a toyota engine in. you'll just create unessecary hassles for yourself

Thats a great motor but as commented above, a VAG one would be much easier to fit. I'd look at a 2E from a MK3. Should have next to no problems bolting it it.

Deciding on a carb to make it run will be the biggest issue. Unless you convert the car to injection, which will bring it's own dilemmas.

if you were to do a 20v conversion make sure its a silvertop version. but i woudnt bother with the 20v if you were to put 4AGE in anyway, they are a fun engine to have but the 4AGZE is well supercharged. And the normal 100kw 16v version is cheaper and a few cheap mods will get it up to the same power as the 20v had anyway.

I had a Corolla SX with the 4A-GE - awesome engine but absolutely no torque. From memory the little torque it did produce was above ~6,000rpm. If you like driving constantly in the 5-7,000rpm range, then go for it. Otherwise, go a VW unit of some sort.

Golf Loon wacked a 1996 SEAT Cordoba in my B1 with little hassle, with the exception of the oil filter housing if I remember correctly and the car went like a rocket as stated. I have been told that most of the early VAG stuff will fit even the 2litre stuff.

I put a 1.8l from a '91 Mk1 Cab in my '76 Audi Fox (Passat B1). Threw a 32/36 Weber carb on it from a 2l Escort (rejetted to suit). 5 spd out of an Audi 80cc back a few years ago. It got around pretty well as they are nice light cars. Good fun and cost bugger all!
I saw one a few years ago which supposedly had a Nissan Pulsar 1.8l. Not sure how that worked but I imagine anything non-VW/Audi would be a lot of trouble and always be a little bit wrong!

you can put anything in there if you work at it I saw an LS passat with a twin cam Fiat motor at the wreckers at Blacktown a few years ago
I reckon a 5 cyl audi motor would be cool especially a 200t motor Ive even seen photos of a VR6 transplant on a german site

You can do anything its all about budget really and preference, going for the Toyota 1.8l 20v is a awesome bit of kit, availability is good if not better than a vw engine and you have the advantage of shopping around import yards. A conversion like this won't be a 5min job your main hurdle will be getting a bell housing adapter plate made.

I have done a 1.8l K-jet swap into a B1 passat wagon was the easy way to go and works well. Cross breading gets mixed comments i almost did it myself and still plan to in another shell
