Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Driver's side mirror problem

    Hi guys,

About a year ago, the driver's side mirror on my CC got stuck in and wouldn't fold out. I tapped on it with a bit of force and it started working again like it never happened.
A couple of weeks ago I started having issues with the same mirror. The mirror would fold in slowly, but it wouldn't fold out. If I fold it out manually, it folds back in... I had to do that a couple of times until it stays out.
I have also noticed the passenger's side mirror "waits" for the driver's side mirror for a couple of minutes, then it folds out.
Any idea what's causing this to happen? Is there anything that I can do to sort this out?

    Many Thanks,
    Vexed

I can hear some grinding noise now, I think there is something broken inside... Will try to open it later and see what I can find...

Sounds like something has gotten inside and is binding. This could then have damaged or broken something in the mechanism.

I hope not... If this is the case, do I need to replace the whole mirror? Or I can buy specific parts to fix it?

Look for a stip of felt tape, flapping about loosely, where the mirror housing pivots. If it's there, rip it out. It's what usally causes them to bind up.

Hi guys, I removed everything from the mirror except for the frame that holds everything... How do you remove that to expose the motor?

I couldn't find any mesh or anything in the way inside...
By the way, I removed the bottom part of the mirror as well, but I forgot to take a pic...

                Thanks...

I took the car over to the dealership to check the DSG, and I asked them to check the mirror as well. The mirror and motor need to be replaced, I was quoted $1050!!!
I will try to find it somewhere else....

Can someone please tell me what is the part number of the mirror? I understand each part in the mirror has a number, but I'm looking for the frame which holds everything and includes the motor. I have been searching around with no luck...

                    Thanks...

Ring VW spare parts and talk to them about what you need. They've always helped me out with finding parts when I don't have a part number. I replaced some parts on my side mirror after it was hit by a 4wd, they're pretty easy to work on and you could definitely change parts yourself.

Thanks mate, will do that... I managed to find the part number, there were sooo many options for the mirror that you don't usually think about... The problem is no one actually sells them... I think I will have to get the parts from VW...
