Managed to get a new VW Genuine spring on eBay from the UK - got here in 2 weeks and a fair bit cheaper than VW dealer here (5 weeks delivery from VW dealership) even with freight from UK included.
Replaced broken spring and decided to anchor both springs (spring on each side of boot) at the least tension hole - consequently boot opens nice and smoothly now - doesn't fly open! The strut is only on the passenger side - it is clearly used as a damper - I guess for dampening (controlling) opening and closing. The original strut was shot and hardly dampening anything. Easy to remove/replace the strut (just a small flat blade screwdriver to lift the clips, don't remove, on each end so you can pull each end off). The strut was purchased from Run Auto Parts (good price) - Stabilus brand, and seems to be from the company that made the VW Genuine strut
All in all - works excellently!
Incidentally, saw a Youtube video where a guy uses a cable tie on each spring to hold a few spring turns tightly together - makes the boot lift look like an electric motor lift!
Will install the fuel flap actuator soon when I get the spring.
