Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Just seen the new Touareg ad towing a jumbo jet.
Wondering if anyone else has seen it or is this old new's
Something about don't bet against a VW.

yes i saw the advert to, today for the 1st time!
read the small print at the bottom. i think it says can only do this after some modifications lol

they added about a ton of weight in the rear so it could maintain traction.. story was on either top gear or 5th gear..Comment

The V10 has a higher diff ratio than all of the others, because it can!
The only mods made to this vehicle for towing the 747, apart from the 4+ tonnes of weight for traction, was to install the "standard" diffs (ie from V8 etc) to give it a lower final drive in case it needed it. Successful pulls were made starting in 2nd gear low range, proving that it didn't need the lower ratio diffs. There was one other non-performance mod made...
This was actually a pre-facelift model (the new ones weren't available at the time of shooting the footage), and so they put a mock-up of the new nose bits on it for the cameras.

Not one of VW's best ads in my opinion. But it's always nice to see a big idea with some outlandish visuals.
Guess i should get back to writing a better ad now!!

Sceptical but proven wrong!
Hi all,
When I first saw the ad I was sceptical about whether this ad was real or just trick photography.
The reason is that there was something drastically wrong with the 747 in the ad and that is the engines. 747s use 4 engines all mounted on separate pods whereas the one in the ad has 2 tandem engines similar to the B52 bomber (which has 4 tandem engines). So troubled was I that I searched the Boeing website looking for such a version of the 747 and was unable to find one.
Further research led me to find this website that explains it all. The engines are not real, the aircraft is one that was retired and modified as a movie prop.
