  • What would you buy instead?

With the diesel Tiguan not currently on sale, what would you buy instead?

I'm sure 99% will say "a petrol Tiguan" so let's exclude that and assume "it has to be diesel" and "similar" size.

I wont proffer suggestions at this stage, but can chime some in once others have had a crack!

Are you after a brand new one? There are few 2015 diesel Tiguan (130TDI) for sale which could be registered demonstrators, some of them have very low km's.

Not sure if sale restrictions apply to already registered cars. Have you checked with any dealers yet?

The Euro 6 diesel compliant Tiguan will be available soon, has been available in Europe for some time now, why compromise !!!

If you are looking to buy immediately, the Mazda CX5 Skyactive Diesel is probably the closest competitor.

              Thanks all, very interesting.

My parents are thinking of replacing their 4yo X1 Xdrive 20d. They'd prefer to stay with diesel (95% certain).

New X1 has obviously been considered. I suggested Tiguan (and pocket the massive difference in price!). When I researched and realised it's not for sale / included in "recall", then the CX5 was the other one I had considered and suggested. I'll suggest the subaru but i suspect they wont go for that (styling).

I'm wondering what VW are doing with demos / trade-ins / near-new in stock?

How soon are they looking at doing something?

I spoke to a dealer today and he said all the stock of Tiguan, Jetta and Caddy has been taken back by VW Aus so it's no longer at the dealerships. However he did also say that there is a fix that is currently going back through the approvals process before it can be applied to these unsold vehicles.

My guess is that there are going to be some pretty good deals going early next year when all these cars are "legit". Volkswagen is going to want to clear the lot ASAP so there will be some hot deals going to get these shifted.

Range Rover Evoque Diesel is another option but it is on the upper end of the price comparison.

                    Thanks interesting piece of info.

There's no urgency so perhaps waiting for this is an option.

Adding to this my parents bought one a few weeks back and the dealer informed them they could purchase a diesel one if they were interested which I found strange considering the circumstances. The sales person said they can sell some models

All BMW X series are manufactured in North Carolina, USA. = no thanks.
If price was not an issue an Audi SQ5 or even a Porsche Macan.

Both very nice cars, but would hardly think they were a reasonable substitute for a diesel Tiguan.

If you wanted something straight away, I would be seriously considering the Subaru Outback. I know it's not a "proper" SUV, however it has raised height, off-road ability and the new model comes with a lot of things the others don't in the base model including adaptive cruise control. Once you've driven a car with ACC you never want to go backwards. The new 5th gen Outback is a much improved car in the looks department also.
