  • Genuine towbar harness - where to buy

I have bought a Hayman Reese towbar without the wiring harness and ECU because I am planning on using the genuine harness to complete the setup on my 2011 147 Tiguan (7spd DSG). I was quoted $450 by a local VW dealer for supply of the harness, but have a few questions:

What is the part number for the towbar wiring harness?
Can I source the part overseas at a cheaper price, like the u.s. for example, or is it an AU specific part?
Does the wiring harness come with everything I require to complete the electrical side of the install? (I have a vag-com cable to complete the ECU side of things).

    Thanks for your help!

If you DIY then get it from anywhere really, if you take it to the workshop for the sake of your warranty get it from the dealer. I personally wouldn't give any warranty (even that it will work after fitted) on the part you bought elsewhere. That's from my own experience.

I am happy to get it from anywhere. I am after a good place for sourcing parts that doesn't include the pacific tax in the price. For example, I used to get all of my parts from the U.S. for my Subaru. They were genuine, they got to my house quicker and even with air fright they were 50% cheaper and that was when we were getting 85 cents to the dollar.

Of course to do that I need the part number for the harness.

Not sure what you mean. I am not talking about getting a counterfeit part. I would also assume that a part number would be different if it the part was modified to suit another market such as the U.S.

As for the warranty, I am not concerned about it as I don't plan on reselling the car for quite some time, and the money I save on DIY more than covers the loss in resale value.

So, I found this part number: 5N0971124J

I also found that the site I use for Subaru parts happens to sell VW parts as well, which is a coincidence, because its the only other brand they sell.

Is anyone able to check out this part number for me?

You need to purchase a harness for a RHD market for a start. that part number is for a R-Line tiguan which is not available here. You need part# 5N2055204 $360 + gst from any VW dealer

Thanks, that was exactly what I was after. So I should be looking for a price point of $400, I'll keep that in mind.

Once again, thanks for the part number.

What I mean is, I generally don't fit the parts the customers buy from who knows where. I've been caught a couple of times, where the component was faulty and I've just wasted 4hours fitting something that at the end refused to get coded with the car.

Fair enough. In this case I'll be the one fitting it. My time is free to waste, but only for me

I just completed doing all the coding with OEM harness, and ECU with towbar from towbars Australia. Works perfect and all for $780.

The ecu and harness was $350 from VW parts dealer at Newstead.

Let me know if you need a hand.

$350? They quoted me $396 about an hour ago!

What style / brand of towbar did you get?

Thanks for the offer of help. I'll see how it goes next weekend.

If you can speak to Marcus at that parts area. Prices do change depending on the dollar apparently.

                        TIGUAN | Towbars Australia

I got the heavy duty without electronics. Prices also change so email them at sales@towbarsaustralia.com.au

Nice guys and very helpful, I just went and picked it up from their warehouse / shop in Nambour.

Hardest part is getting the rear plastic bumper off and removing all the internal panels to install the control unit. (I removed all this first to ensure I had the pre-installed trailer electronics from factory). These electronics should be installed on your model. When you remove the internals there should be a RED plug behind the grey padding.

Also there is an OEM cut point for the towbar to come through, put the new towbar on then line up where to cut. Looks neater if you dont have to cut all of it out.

I installed the towbar and VW harness on the weekend and could't get the tb module to work. Just kept getting a could't contact module error. Unfortunately I stupidly put back all of the interior so I cant easily check the harness plug.

There was a white plug on the module to 13 pin plug that I couldn't find a connection for. Does anyone know what it is used for?

Also, any tips on what I may have done wrong?
