  • Have 18' wheels, looking for 16'

    Hi all
I hope the title shows what I mean. We have a 2009 Tiguan which was optioned up to the 18 inch VW rims when new (we bought it 2nd hand) and we'd like to either buy (if not too expensive) or exchange for, the standard Tiguan 16 inch alloy rims.

Reason is as we live in a rural area and would like to put some more robust tyres & they're not available in larger rim sizes - I guess the 18s are considered sporty.

We live in SE New South Wales approximately 20 mins drive from Canberra.

    Many thanks

    Rod

Rod, is your 18" the New York style? I have 16" Portland rim (in good condition) and thinking up a size or two for stickier wider tyres. FYI wheel database http://www.4130-products.com/wheels/

PM me if you are interested.

I have a set of 16x7.5 Audi rims in the For Sale section. 5x112 PCD. offset is ET45. Centrebore is 66.6mm I know the PCD & width is right for the Tig but I'm not sure about the offset. You can buy hub rings if the centrebore is too big.

The rims don't have any kerb rash & are cheap at <$200 for the set. Even they tyres have a bit of tread left. My company has a depot near Bowral. I can drop them off there for P/up if your interested.

Hi. Sorry for the late reply - my pc crashed (1 of the joys of living in a rural area) just as I was entering the post and I didn't think it worked.
Volkswagen Fan - I think my wheels are the Portland style. They look like this http://www.wheelcollision.com/wccpix/0wcc2514.JPG
Brad - Thanks for the offer (great price too) but I'm looking for the standard Tiguan wheels which I believe is 6.5 inch width tyre as this really opens up the range of the tyres I'd prefer to use. I like the look of the Tiguan Portland style too.
New Dubber - Yes still interested.

            Many thanks

95% of tyre sizes that will fit a 6.5" rim will fit a 7.5" and comply with the mfrs recomended sizing tables (unless you intend going much narrower than what comes on the vehicle OEM).

Make sure you get your load rating = or higher. Speed rating is a bit more flexible but you may as well get that = or better too or you have to put a sticker on your windscreen.

What tyres are you thinking? Coopers or one of the more off-road focussed Bridgestones?

I don't have a Tiguan yet (LOL) but I'm seriously considering getting a set of these Steel Wheels 9922 Black 16" Alloy Wheels - Wheelbase and putting on a set of BFgoodrich All Terrain 235/70 R16 tyres.
Not sure if that helps you.

That's 50mm bigger in diameter from the stock 215/65r16 isn't it?. In most Australian states that would be illegal without an engineers certificate.
                    eg: In NSW:
The outside diameter of the wheel and tyre combination must be no more than 15mm over the largest diameter
wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle and not more than 15mm below the smallest diameter wheel
and tyre combination specified for the vehicle.
How do you intend to recalibrate the speedometer as +50mm will make it read slow eg: 110kph indicated will be about 115kph actual.

Not quite sure why you'd buy a set of steelies for GBP250 + shipping when there are so many cheap 2nd hand alloys out there.

I am not set on any type of wheel, but I am after something that looks sought of retro in black like old sunrasia wheels.
I like the look of dished wheels, I'm not a fan of many of the new modern wheels at least for off road. I don't need to buy them from the uk, I could just get a set of 16" transporter wheels locally assuming they fit the Tiguan

Thanks about the info about engineering certificate. I see lots of 4wds on the road with bigger diameter tyres, do they all have engineers certificates.

Regarding speed, I'll just use my gps.

These wheels and tyres are not intended for commuting on, but a spare set that will lay around, and only used when I know I am going to need them.

I'm also considering a 4 motion Crafter like the one below but the Tiguan is probably better for getting to work in.

I doubt most have been engineered. I assume they get away with it becaause it looks "factory" - a bit like P-Platers with turbo Skylines, fart-cannons & tyres that have obvious sidewall cuts because the rims have too much poke.

I have nothing against doing mods that are outside of the rules but if you "recomend" them to somebody else it's a good idea to point out the possible negatives as people have different levels of risk.

4WD Crafter would be an interesting off-roader. The AWD transporter doesn't suit?

BTW: check your state laws as they do have slight differences.

Yeah no problem, I wasn't really suggesting that they should follow my advice regarding tyres just sharing what I might do myself. I can see how people could get the wrong info though.

I had a mate that was right into 4wd and the only thing he told me (here in Victoria) is the police measure the distance from the ground to the bottom of your mud guard. If the distance was to high they would defect your car, but all you had to do was put on longer mud guards.
Not sure how accurate that is but someone else from Victoria might know.
