Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

One of the problems with having the left foot "resting" over the brake pedal is even though the brakes may not be engaged, the brake lights may be on. If you've ever driven behind a person where the brake lights are coming on even when they're not braking this is somewhat disconcerting.

I tend to give these types of drivers a wide berth as to me it appears that they are not focussed on what they should be doing (driving the car). I'm not sure if there are laws against it but it's certainly up there with annoying habits like driving around with fog lights on.

In Western Australia you will fail your driving test if you left foot brake when going for an Automatic license. I don't think you'll find it in any legislation, I think it's just common sense.

I checked with the RMS (NSW) and there is NOTHING that prohibits the use of left foot braking. The only thing that a driver examiner can fai you on is if you lose control of the vehicle, and this covers ANYTHING that causes you to lose control. If you use left foot braking but have full control of the vehicle, then it is perfectly OK.

You can download a booklet from the RMS where it lists the reasons for failure, and left foot braking is not one of them. As a matter of interest, coasting with the transmission in neutral at any time IS, as is what is called "dead sticking" (where you slip the transmission into neutral and roll to a stop at traffic lights).

You're even more in control when you use your left foot for braking, especially in the automatic (bear in mind that the position of the steering column makes using the left foot for braking in some manual vehicles somehow unpractical.
...and if you've done it for whole your life it shouldn't take you more than 20km of the city driving to learn how much of the delay, if any (right foot not pressing the accelerator pedal before you can squeeze the brake pedal ) you need to allow for the DSG not to get confused.
I drive manual T5 and the DSG and autos cars and never got confused, automatically use the left for the braking when switch between. them. The car will just stop quicker if you do.
