Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I am a mechanic by trade so anything other than whats in the book gets canned come time for a service. I was only having it serviced through VW to get a VW dealer stamp in the service book as i hoped it would add value come time to sell it. Its got 57,000klms on it so its only been oil, oil filter and an air cleaner so far that i remember, and a few typical notes like the pollen filter and wiper blades. Now that my parents are buying it i kind of think i shouldnt have bothered. About the only benefit i see is VW are able to advise of upgrades to software etc

The problem is with dealers they ask ridiculous dollars for both parts and labour and normally the simple services are done by apprentices. I dont mind paying good money for work if they put their best guys on it, but not when they put the apprentice on it who takes home the smallest pay packet.

Surely as a mech, anything you vetoe the dealer on you would do yourself? I know I do - usually at half-2/3rds the recomended interval. Parts are fairly reasonable if you look around.

Bare in mind the book is not specific to the Australian market, therefore a few items on the Australian service schedule the dealerships have, do not appear in the book.

Well, wipers have been noted as smearing every single service so far and they work fine. They smear when there are bugs all over the windscreen which is normal for where i live. Pollen filter, people have in the past told me its not that urgent so leave it there till the 60k mark, i now know that when the smell starts its time to change it.

Thanks for the heads up re the non listed items. Are you able to tell me what they are as dad may get me to service it from now on. I might just ask VW themselves
