Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Tiguan / EOS head unit compatibility

    Hi there,

I'm planning on selling my EOS and purchasing a Tiguan, as we have a baby on the way.

My EOS has what I believe to be an RCD 510. The Tiguan I am looking at purchasing has what I think is the stock standard head unit. It looks like this:

I just want to confirm that if I want, I will be able to either:
    1. Swap the head unit from the EOS over with the one above
    2. Leave the EOS as is, and purchase an RNS 510 to put in the Tiguan

Is there anything to be aware of? Is the swap procedure relatively straight forward?

    Thanks!
    Ben

Yes the swap is relatively straight forward, however you'll need the code for both head units to do the swap.

The code is kept in the car so you can pull the head unit out and put it back in the same car (or change the battery) without needing to re-enter the code, however if you want to swap head units you'll need the codes for both.

There's a few youtube videos showing the steps for Golf 6 which should be pretty much identical for both cars.

Tiguan will take both RCD510 and the RNS510. Obviously the RNS510 requires a bit more work as you'll also need to install the antenna.

Yes all three unit RNS510 RCD510 and RCD310 (as you said stock) are interchangeable. But you will be missing some options like RVC or Parking sensors if the car does not have them (obviously ) Also you may have to coded them to the car either by dealer/ specialist or using VCDS cable by yourself.

RNS510 are going around 1K in ebay and RCD510 are quite cheap about 250 AUD.

What year is the Eos? There are 3 Bosch versions of the RCD 510 Starting with a 190 (last 3 numbers) then 190A followed by a 190B which has no RVC input.
Hold down the setup button for 5 secs plus until an info display appears you will then see what version you have.
If you have the 190 you will have the input for an RVC but the BT unit in the new? Tiguan will not be compatible with the older radio (it will display incomplete telephone numbers in the phone book and will not display the song title in the display when using BT audio streaming).
The music selection is also extremely slow when selecting music off the SD card when compared to the 190A &190B versions.

If you have a 190A this should be compatible with your new Tiguan BT unit and you will also have the option to fit an OEM reverse camera if you wish for around $150.

190B versions have only been out for the last 18 months or so which I doubt you will have again it will be compatible with your BT unit but will have no option to fit a reverse camera.

That's great, thanks guys! I haven't had any luck finding the code for the RCD 510 yet. Hopefully it will be in the handbook somewhere. I couldn't determine whether I have the 190, 190A or 190B either. It's a 2009 EOS, but holding down the Setup button doesn't seem to do anything (even for much longer than 5 seconds).

I'm leaning towards just purchasing a RNS 510 anyway. I understand I'll need to add a GPS antenna for the navigation, but is everything else just plug-in and go? The Tiguan I'm looking at is from 2009. Is there anything I need to do in regards to Bluetooth?

The other way to find the code is to pull out the unit and look at the sticker on the side. You likely won't find it in the manual as it will possibly be "generic" and cover off all models in the one manual. If you pull it out you'll quickly see if it has RVC connector on the back or not (which will also be confirmed with the model code on the sticker). It's good practice anyway and should only take 5 minutes

The other way is to find someone with a VCDS cable and get them to pull off the head unit model code with an autoscan.

I'm pretty sure with the RNS there is some coding that is required - someone else can probably confirm this. RCD510 is plug and play with no coding. If you add RVC with either unit you'll have to code this. There's a few DIY's kicking around the place so just do a quick search to confirm the details. Here's a quick selection:

One thing you'll have to be aware of is that if you're installing Bluetooth into your 2009 Tiguan and it has a red MFD (display in the middle of your instrument cluster), then you'll need to be careful what hardware you select if you want to get the buttons on your steering wheel working with your phone. Simply put you have "old" electronics in your MFD and new RNS510/Bluetooth which are not compatible with each other. This changed somewhere around 2010 I believe. You'll be able to tell pretty quick as the later models have a white MFD and the earlier ones are red.

Just something to be aware of if you're buying an older car and looking to get all the features working.

Ok from the year it would appear to be a 190 model or even one of the earlier models with the phone button on the LHS of the unit. I would suggest you leave this unit in the Eos and try and source a newer version RCD 510 or RNS510 pending your budget. I would be inclined to try and source a late 2010-11 pre face lift Tiguan these come with the white MFD as seen in the current new Tiguan range. The MY11 models also come with the same steering wheel available on the current models. This will make it a lot easier when retrofitting audio units and Bluetooth modules
